Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

In terms of touchscreen Nokia is very late: Apple and especially the Koreans from Samsung and LG already have several generations of device on the market. Alone with the argument touchscreen makes so little more to score. Nokia tried over the purse strings.

So, you announced the 5800 XpressMusic at the product launch in the fall of 2008 with a predatory pricing of around 330 euros. The mobile phone is not now but so cheap.

Nokia requires 395 euro in our own online shop, at Amazon, it costs less than 350 euro. But also so that remains 5800 XpressMusic of one of the cheapest touch screen models, since the manufacturer can be no slouch.

This is evident when out of the box: in addition to the usual offerings such as charger, stereo headset, USB cable and software among other things a cable of TV, a simple table stand, a sturdy bag and a 8 can be found larger screens to connect to the 5800 XpressMusic, GB large memory card.

Only the latter has an equivalent of less than 20 euro – at the moment and would be they not, she would be a good addition to the around 80 MB of tightly integrated memory.

Because the 5800 is a music specialist with respectable Navi skills – and for both, such as maps, one can have never have enough memory. Who do not meet the 8 GB: the mobile digested large MicroSD card 16 GB.

In the scope of delivery so was not saved. But perhaps in processing and appearance? Both are not necessarily parade disciplines by Nokia. Dimensions 111 x 52 x 16 mm the 5800 is significantly narrower, but also significantly thicker than an iPhone.

It lies well in the hand, but by far not as elegant effect. The Nokia is made of plastic and it suggests is that the device could one day begin to Crease. It’s not fresh out of the box and the processing is all in all in order.

But small grooves on the sides, as well as to the three buttons on the front and the edge of the display to much shelter are a really high-quality appearance for dust and dirt.

If you want a more noble touch screen cell phone, must spend more. In the display, the Nokia, however, depends most competitors: the Board (39 x 70 mm) is smaller than about with an iPhone, but shows more vivid colors, a higher contrast and is clearly brilliant. Because despite smaller area it consists of 360 x 640 pixels.

Apple’s iPhone or T-Mobile G1 Google phone there are 320 x 480 pixels. Small fonts are sharp razor. How the new interface control can read below in the chapter “The touch-operation”.

The view shows how cheap the 5800 Xpress music is indeed, in the menu. Since Nokia bought a powerful equipment, which is the expensive N-series models in nothing. The music player (see chapter “The rocker”) is one of the highlights of course.

A further highlight is the integrated A-GPS receiver, who noted the current position in the test within a few seconds. Nokia has installed as usual the own maps navigation application in the version 2.0.

The program itself, as well as the maps are free of charge. The active control with voice prompts, arrow – or map must be booked but as a service. Delivery can get routes, track its position on a map and find addresses and for example restaurants.

Calendar, contacts, messages

The appointment and contact management, as well as the messaging features are extensive and meet other S60 devices. So can each contact assign more than enough telephone numbers and addresses, synchronization with Outlook work properly, even note fields are transmitted in contacts.

That will be enough for most users, but those who want to have Microsoft Outlook with all details on the phone, with a Windows Mobile device on the safe side.

There’s a free add-on application for connecting to an Exchange Server. Nokia also offers a direct link to a range of software. He hides under the somewhat unfortunate title of “Download” in the menu and offers also much less choice and comfort as Apple’s AppStore or the Android market for the G1.

Here you find particularly practical applications such as free reader for PDF and Office documents, or a ZIP utility for data compression.

Nokia made the S60 interface with the 5800 XpressMusic touchscreen-enabled for the first time. This is good news and bad news. The new version of S60 is the number 5, and the good news is: who knows older versions, will be ready to go 5800 XpressMusic immediately with the.

The menu structure, the multitasking ability, the possibilities to customize the interface to the own – all this is similar to the standard of S60 devices. The menu button that leads at any time in the main menu or long press calls a list of active programs, is one of the few mechanical presser and sits between the telephone keys below the display.

Right on the housing is still a small valve, the display and keys locks. The remaining operation via the touch screen. The individual icons, adapted re-conditioned and visually to the icons of Nokia’s Ovi Internet portal, as well as the entries in the menu lists are sufficiently large and be sure to meet with your bare fingers.

You need a sense of direction

The 5800 responds already to gentle pressure quite reliable, however not at any point: changes the menu display in list view, what even happens on the second, time on the third menu level, requires the phone suddenly double. That sucks at the beginning, but at some point you ate this rule too.

Ultimately, it has failed yet Nokia really optimal match of the S60 interface on the touch screen operation. The two soft keys, however, are consistent the right traces each a menu level, which left some very extensive options. Alone with a contact, 16 different actions can be run – from the call to send the contact as a business card.

Where Apple courage shows to the gap and so an overview creates different user interface, Nokia offers flexibility, the user at the first contact requires considerably more sense.

Home screen according to own needs

Speaking of long list: scroll is either via a scroll bar or by dragging the finger across the screen. This works well as long as the lists are not too long. To meet the desired entry in a well-stocked address book with multiple 100 contacts, there’s already some skill. The faster variant is the search for first or last name.

You can not search for other contact information, such as about the company however. The home screen can be as usual fit your needs for S60. 5800 XpressMusic available that hides four applications or – this is new – a four contacts with photo.

To each contact, there is a list of the last calls and messages, as well as, for example, the ability to send a to report to the respective contact. During a favorite functions, the display still upcoming events as well as direct access to the Internet search, both missing from a contacts.

Text inputs require gentle pressure

What always is to see is a link to the address book, as well as the mobile keypad. What is completely lacking and what other S60 models partly offer is the ability to pick up the Inbox of email accounts on the home screen.

While Apple’s iPhone responds to mere touch, gentle pressure requires the touch screen of the 5800. This is not quite as elegant, but has the advantage that the cellular phone also via pin can be operated. Which is on the back, is however slightly too small for convenient handling.

As a real gimmick Nokia Board still a guitar plectrum, which can be used as an alternative to the pen. This can be useful especially when entering text. For this purpose, the 5800 provides several ways: by a virtual phone keyboard up to handwriting recognition.

It remains somewhat cumbersome

The best it works but with a hidden QWERTY keyboard; our test device showed the English variant, here a software update will remedy this. But as with all pure touchscreen devices: it is somewhat cumbersome. Who writes frequently longer texts with the mobile, is certainly better served by a mechanical keyboard.

Overall, the touch first-born of Nokia can be defying the mentioned weaknesses and good in the face of the huge facilities and especially not worse than other S60 models use; the menu looks tidier than usual in S60. Nokia is but far from simplicity, which fascinated iPhone users.

Despite the powerful features: The 5800 XpressMusic wants to be above all a music phone – and here of what promises it holds. The scope of delivery is complete with a 8 GB memory card, headset, data cable, the music player is so immediately to use.

Via the enclosed Ovi suite, USB mass storage function or even a memory card reader, you can fill the phone with massive music. It is automatically sorted by artists, albums and song titles, genres, and composers. You can also create custom playlists on the phone.

The sound: It’s up to the headset

In addition to a repeat mode and a random play, the player offers extensive setting options for the sound. For example a balance control, an effect that should ensure more surround sound, as well as a bass booster. In addition an 8-band equalizer, which allows you to save multiple sound settings.

But even without optimization, the phone sounds excellent, you can hear it but only when using a good headset. Here we must restrict the praise on the delivery, because the included earphones HS-45 not over take the excellent sound of the phones. The high frequency range is too dominant, basic tone and bass range fall off very early.

Need to tickle the actual qualities of the phone, so better substitute. Thanks to the 3.5 mm jack above the unit between on/off button and USB connection fits any standard headset.

Still miles away from good sound

Who wants to also call the better headphones, is simply the enclosed extension in between – it has a built-in microphone and a small remote control to control the player.

In addition, Nokia promises excellent, integrated in the housing stereo speaker. The producer speaks of stereo surround sound and has left it under the back cover something air, what adds more volume to the sound.

It sounds better than at many other music phones, we are but also here still miles away from really good sound. After all, the speakers are surprisingly loud, an underground compartment can be thus easily fill up.

How to use: No problem thanks to multitasking

Is no problem thanks to the multitasking ability of mobile phones to surf while listening to music on the Internet or typing SMS, and the player is immediately accessible via the multimedia toolbar from any point in the menu.

This bar will be displayed to the right by clicking on a small icon on the display. To choose the point of ‘Music’ in the main menu the other acoustic capabilities of the 5800 XpressMusic reveal themselves. Here, an FM radio, which automatically searches for stations and that names displays can be found.

Also Nokia linked here to the appropriate services in the Internet – especially to the Nokia music store, which offers DRM protected music for usually one euro per share. If you buy by mobile phone, access via Wi-Fi on the shop.

For any charges for the transferred data are added to the purchase price. The same applies for the podcast application in the music menu, which you can subscribe to the podcasts.

The phone can be with the additional software so in terms of business vigorously upgrade, the multimedia applications are available but the focus.

For example, the video player, which plays movies at 30 frames per second and supports all major format including real videos and WMV files.

The camera Nokia has again hidden in the menu, the test device, she finds herself under “Programs”, where she probably thought no one.

After all, the entry in the main menu can be moved, on top of that you can right turn the camera over a dedicated key on the housing.

The latter is used in addition to the control of the auto focus and to raise. The photo resolution is rather modest with 3.2 megapixel resolution for today’s standards, two LEDs is attempting to replace a real Flash.

Who wants more than just press the button, find many setting possibilities of color effects of the sensitivity to the contrast.

The frequency response of the 5800 XpressMusic can look leave: it provides a balanced sound across the spectrum. The frequency response of the included headset is, however, a tragedy: the high frequency range is far too dominant, basic tone and bass range fall off very early.

And how long can I use the magic before the juice goes out the Nokia? It is clear: who is constantly on the Web with the good browser, uses Wi-Fi or HSDPA, who uses the 5800 navigation and longer every day music listening, which must be recharged overnight.

Who is confined on the phone, comes well over the rounds: In the test laboratory, the battery with a suitable capacity ranged from 1300 for a sechstündiges duration of conversation in D networks or for two and a half hours in the UMTS network mAh.

The device with screen runs six and a half hours. The sound is good neat, slightly weaker in the UMTS network, the transmission and reception quality. You can by the way significantly increase reception and endurance by disabling UMTS.

Fürs iPhone isn’t enough

Bottom line: Nokia has not succeeded in an iPhone competitor at eye level, knows that the manufacturer himself. The ease of use of Apple cell phones don’t get Nokia alone because of the huge package of equipment, as well as the historically grown S60 system. Nevertheless: Also much easier would be moved it under these conditions.

This Nokia is equal to two birds with one stone: the 5800 XpressMusic is the touch screen competition both the price and the facilities. At the same time, the Finns finally offer a music specialist who fear teaches the competition from Samsung and Sony Ericsson.
