The acronym GSM come, as always, of the Anglo – Saxon words Global System for Mobile communications. As Abbreviationfinder indicates the GSM is simply a communication standard for mobile telephony , implemented by combining satellite and terrestrial antennas. A mobile using GSM technology are also known as mobile 2G or second generation .
Although its primary function is as we said telephony, just as formerly could use the phone line for modem, GSM also enables the transmission of data through their channels, as long as the latter are free. It is a system digital , and being a standard used worldwide, allows use anywhere within range even in international areas (called roaming or roaming ).
At first GSM came from the French Groupe Spécial Mobile, since it is developing in Europe, although it spread very quickly in the world and as we said, now is the basic system for all mobile communications , and still the most widely used , but due to technical limitations, it is being rapidly replaced in advanced countries by new systems 3g and 4g , using the standard UTMS , higher speed and performance.
The GSM only allowed a download speed of 100 kbps data, it is disconnected to lose coverage, tarificaba per second, not volume data … all very insufficient characteristics for applications demanded by the public, such as streaming audio and video, viewing web content or video … Another well – known standard and also coexists with the above is the GPRS , which is nothing more than an optimization of GSM for use with data. This standard works with GSM base, which is often called technology 2.5G.
However, these new systems have not entirely supplanted the old GSM networks, but live with them. Most mobile operators and allow dual use of these networks, so that if there is no coverage in a place of 3G can use 2G (GSM) network without any problem. This is because the 3G and 4G infrastructure have been made on existing 2G, following running latter. In general we can say that a mobile can run 4g 3g and 2g also being compatible with older networks.
