Delaware geography
Much of Delaware’s land is very flat, averaging only 58 feet above sea level. The only significant exceptions are the rolling hills of the Piedmont Plateau, which covers the northern edges of the state; the state’s highest point is located there, rising to 447 feet.
The Coastal Plain, covering most of Delaware, is a low-lying stretch of land that borders the Atlantic Ocean. It is approximately 2,200 miles long, stretching from central New Jersey, south to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.
The state’s eastern coastlines contain many bays, tidal streams, and swamps. Its southern border with Delaware contains over 30,000 swamp acres. Sandy beach fronts are large stretches of the southern Delaware Bay and Atlantic coastline.
The Delmarva Peninsula occupies parts of three US states: Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. The peninsula is about 180 miles long and nearly 71 miles wide. It is bordered by the Chesapeake Bay on the west, and the Delaware River, Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. The land of the peninsula is flat with a few low-lying hills in the north.

The (mostly artificial) Chesapeake & Delaware Canal runs 14 miles long, 450 feet wide and 35 feet deep through Maryland and the Delaware, connecting the Delaware River to the Chesapeake Bay. It is a modern sea level electronically controlled commercial waterway, carrying ship traffic to the east and west.
The most significant river is the Delaware. Other notable rivers include the Mispillion, Muderkill, Nantok and St. Johns.
