Naim NAIT XS Integrated Amplifier

NAIT Xtra small called her latest amplifier for 1700 euro Naim. This is real British understatement.

Sometimes good recipes are easy. That thought is probably also the dev team by Naim in Salisbury when she designed the NAIT XS: took their top amplifier Supernait (3500 euro, 9/07), entschlackte its facilities as much as possible and the new, significantly cheaper version was finished. Only: This recipe at the NAIT XS, which stands for 1800 euros in stores, went up? Really saved in the right place?

Externally, you can see the difference with the Supernait on the slightly less massive body, the absence of balance control and the non-existent row of keys to the recording option for the NAIT XS. This is a good idea, as probably the most music lovers can get over these features and it saves quite a lot of money. Because Naim used expensive Reed relays with extra hard rhodium contacts and for the balance control before choosing the recording high quality Alps regulator with motor. That accounted for the digital inputs and outputs, which, however, only, have a very good CD player and other digital sources with good D/A converters.

Looking now in the Interior, it is, however, amazed that there is hardly a difference of the analogue amplifier boards of the two brothers. At best falls into the eye that the NAIT XS has a weaker transformer of Talema Irish Nobel forge, which explains also the smaller nominal rating. Otherwise, there are fine equipped with small, mounted directly on the surface of surface mounted devices (SMD) components, which allow very short signal paths.

The circuit of the preamp part is the NAC 202 (12/02) taken and thus, like the performance section, same as in the Supernait. Thus, the NAIT XS also has the same very potent of power bipolar transistors by declined. In contrast to the Naim power amplifiers, which are implemented with NPN types can be found in the XS both NPN and PNP types, making it complementary built as all newer NaimFull Amplifier. Sound, this is not quite as good, sound’s Salisbury, but unless more effective and therefore offer more performance.

The separate channel rectification with rich Siebelkos of the British manufacturer of BHC and the separate supply of the new electronics necessary for the diaphragms is very laborious and praiseworthy.

Although he is priced closer to the little brother of NAIT 5i (5/08), it can be upgraded in contrast to this with an external power supply. It chooses the n friend between the Flatcap 2 X for 830 euros, the Hi-cap for $1500, or even the supercap for 4800 euro.

Although the NAIT XS offers RCA connectors as well as the DIN Sockets so beloved by Naim, the connection via the DIN connection is advisable to those who have a source of n, because results in the RCA-WEG inside has an extra flat ribbon cable.

A receipt can be on solid backing, around the NAIT in an HD Quadrosystem to integrate (1/09). He also owns a prepress output that can drive a subwoofer. Both shows that Naim did fit the XS for more complex systems.

In the stereoplay listening room he didn’t, need all of this as he with the reference speakers Magico V 3 (6/08) was linked. And already the first bars pleasantly surprised the tester, because he played very consistent and strong timbre. So i quickly carried the comparison with the little brother of NAIT 5. This gave also natural timbres and enjoyed with its homely style of play, but was the NAIT XS a much heavier calibre. So, he had significantly more relaxed and more stable hear great orchestral tuttis and is strongly reminiscent of his large, more expensive brother Supernait. The NAIT XS but lost the direct comparison with this stereoplay highlight ! So kept the Supernait complex passages the overview more and offered the deeper as also more controversial bass. Clearly, the distance was but lower than that of the little brother.

As equal partner turned out to the Linn Majik I (1/08), like the Supernait stereoplay highlight crowned. Both amps had their advocates. Preferred that one the lush timbres of the XS, so violins and guitars, rich wood body were to hear and voices such as that of Johnny Cash for “One” (“American III, solitary man”;) Columbia) sonorer resounded the others referenced in the finer articulation, the deeper down enough bass and minimal open height of Majik I.

The Linn at Great Orchestral remained staunch and concert space deeper and more generous was back, liked the NAIT XS in Chamber music with more melting, of the property to move the musicians closer to the listening position.

Were the testers on a stalemate in the sum of all properties and therefore also awarded the NAIT XS a stereoplay highlight.

STP: For decades, Naim was a standard bearer of the stereophonic high end. Now to go with your HDX to the network player and Bentley even on the car-HiFi area. Be thrown there not old claims overboard?

HP: Naim produced since time immemorial playback devices for people who passionately love to listen to music, and not just for techies. If music is more and more people in a variety of ways, we must meet the challenge.

STP: Also Naim of SMD technology has opposed a long time circuits with large, discrete components. Now there are SMD Assembly at your. How can this contradiction be explained?

HP: When the SMD technology on the market, the offer when compared to discrete components was limited. Now, then, there are over ten years more choice. At the sound key points we use continues to discrete components.

STP: Is now also the characteristic, aimed clearly at the Highender n design replaced?

HP: We have renewed our design pretty often over the last 30 years, probably four times [laughs]. At some point we will do surely again, but the sound quality comes first with us.
