Pickup 2500 Gold Ring

Moving iron cartridge eked out a niche next to the numerically superior MMs and MCs so far. That could change quickly with the new series of gold ring.

That the 2000 explicitly sold as MM, has to do with the low awareness of the moving-iron technique. Unlike at MMs and moving coils, wearing either tiny bar magnets, or fine dishwashers on the cantilever, both parts of the generator are mounted at MIs firmly in the system body. The music-dependent modulation of the magnetic field lines – a prerequisite for the emergence of the signal voltage – takes over a tiny tube (other manufacturers also a slice or ring) of magnetically highly conductive material that sits back on the cantilever and immerse in the stationary field. Permalloy, a nickel-iron alloy, is usually used, which is why Nagaoka the own systems also “moving Permalloy”, short MP, is called.

In practice, the gold rings behave exactly like MM systems. You need a high-impedance, low capacitive degree (47kΩ, < 200pF) and respond to high capacity as their magnetic brothers with brittle, brilliance-driven sound. They not good so as a panacea for poor phono inputs, the low inductive MIs of Grado are better suited for such cases.

A strength of MIs is that the mobile part of the generator consists of fewer components, which also weigh less than MM systems. It is so simple with the MI-principle to realize a needle – given the exposed enormous acceleration, those close to the diamond for example in noisy, high-frequency-rich passages at the end of the plates is an important condition for good sound, with high mechanical strength and low inertia.

The housing must be especially stiff, however, and allow a good contact to the headshell. Gold ring, they are always solid therefore with increasing price. The small systems bear full plastic, the medium-sized gold ring 2300 comes in the aluminium body. The two large gold rings exceed the 8-gram mark with their massive mounting plates already.

There are other differences in the construction of the generator, the cantilever material and last but not least the diamond cut. So look at the body of the 2100 and 2200 confusingly similar, but only in the more expensive the bobbin pole plates of supermalloy has even more efficient brother of Permalloy. And although both with the same elliptical diamond are fitted, only the 2200 has a hardened, slightly darker shimmering and minimal leaner cantilever.

EKOS arms, mounted in two identical Linn which were gold ring in the family internal elimination system, the expected first this 2100 fell victim to: in absolute terms a good all-round system, but this 2200 brings charge so much more dynamism and clarity that one 2100 actually doesn’t need it for only 30 euros. Also the 60-Euro step to the 2300 is clearly justified: his Gyger II grinding sounds still relatively good-natured, the system can conjure up but noticeably better at frequency extremes – its easy “audiophile” vote with unobtrusive highlighted shine effects is welcome in many plants.

That more expensive does not always automatically better, showed the comparison between the 2300 and the case 40 euros of more expensive 2400, whose elegant components (vital stylus, conical, hardened needle carrier) were promising to read, but here just not right to play together. After too long adjusting and playing a were not to dampen the slightly overly motivated tweeter of this system, the tester decided instead just 2500 to recommend the much balanced, hardly more expensive.

The top model sounds exactly as one might wish a big gold ring MM: very corporeal and present, with wonderful silky treble and crisp bass dynamics. His 2SD-Nadelschliff has it as rare as an astounding ability, on the one hand very fine to resolve, on the other hand vinyl noises such as crackling and Groove noise almost disappear. So calm and discreet hardly another system through the black PVC spiral slides.
