Network Player Linn Akurate DS

Linn also opts for continuity, as the over 30-year upgrade history shows the LP12 turntable legend. With the “digital stream” players opened the Scottish company a completely new chapter – but last year and finally completed another: the CD as a physical medium has served in Glasgow.

  2. Data sheet

The new DS player get their music data directly from the disc, but via network connection from an external hard drive. On the outside, so for data transmission and control, communicate the player known, fully open standards, whereby any networked PC or Mac, and almost any NAS Panel can serve as a supplier. For the noble Akurate DS the RipNAS, however, is an ideal partner: runs silent, rips CDs automatically, and provides very comfortable access to the collected treasures of music thanks to a new server program.
Together with the RipNAS server which costs 1200 euros in the here tested version, the Linn Akurate DS is still slightly more expensive than the audio research. Solo, however, it comes with 5200 euro markedly cheaper. The entry you can connect to just him without additional investment through a network router with PC, providing at the same time storage and control services. Sonically, this is reassuring, all servers, routers, switches and LAN cable equal: eh about buffered and newly clocked until then, network technology, there is In the player and who knows tough only two States: the music is playing or not playing. How we experience the speling (or any other DS players), arises from the interaction of control software, hardware basics and device firmware. Consider the hardware first, namely from the analog end. Because it looks yet classic HiFi, as in a very high-quality CD player: symmetric, compact in SMD design analog filters and output levels, fed from two stereo D/A converters WM 8741 of the Scottish firm of Wolfson. Instead of the digital filter integrated in the 8741 Linn used however own upsampling programs in an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate array) run by Xilinx.
Upstream ruled a small computer – clean decoupled requests according to the high-precision converter clock data packets over the network on the right half of the Board -, checks, if necessary, request, buffers and corrected, then decodes and ultimately provides the audio page as perfect, constant bit stream.
Not only music data, but also operating system updates can come over the network – free and easily playable owner. The DS is capable of learning, and in Glasgow, a small army of engineers is constantly working on his refinement. So has grown about the list of supported file formats: FLAC, Apple Lossless and AIFF/WAV covers all relevant lossless formats, with MP3 also the main lossy. In a few weeks is with the firmware family Cara (named as the previous versions of Auskerry and Bute after a Scottish island) the so far most powerful development thrust in the House: Cara adds support for AAC files, random and repeat playback, as well as the long-awaited Web-interface to configure of the player via Web browser. Interesting is also the Jukebox”” – function that you want to allow, predefined playlists, songs, directly with the digit keys on the remote control to retrieve sender or albums, where also multi-digit numbers are allowed – the potential is here so far beyond the usual six or ten favourite keys out.
Now, one could argue that other manufacturers already have things such as AAC or random playback. Who like hooks up feature lists, should however previously set priorities. The Linn’s were never intended as technology toys. And as audiophiles, future-proof music sources they were on from the very first day so perfectly equipped, that there at least until today no really competitive might: all DS players support, for example, resolutions up to 24-bit / 192 kHz, which opens a Sonic parallel universe with the most significant Studio master transfers are offered now by Chesky, reference recordings, 2 L, Naim and Linn itself. Regardless of the resolution run perfectly “gapless”, so without any interruption all music files: pieces transitioning into or phrases about to live – and concept – Opera albums, merge also via network into a single unit, exactly like the original CD and without exposing just a millisecond at the track change. Also fast forward and rewind for all formats – with display of the remaining time – is in streaming circles until now rather a rarity.
The operating concept of Linn’s, that relies on external controller programs, was a legitimate criticism initially because of the limited selection of suitable software. Now however, the basic idea of the whole project, to get a wide variety of customized solutions, through disclosure of the DS control protocols and cooperation with any interested developer begins to show its strength: no matter whether a PC (programs: LinnGUI, Kinsky), a Mac (Kinsky Mac, Songbook Mac), which is intended to browse the music library Pocket PC (KinskyPDA), Nokia’s N810 Webtablet (LeiaDS), the iPhone or iPod touch (SongBook, plug-in player) – the software (see iPod-screenshot on the previous page) is ready.
Generally speaks for the external controller, that the whole variety of server cowering little easily browse titles directly in front of the device can, for example, 20_000. The controller programs for iPod touch take high resolution, colored menus and instantaneously scrollable lists directly to the listener’s position and display cover artwork. On the other hand they must not keep on pleasurable listening as the Akurate remembers not only the current, but all titles of selection and all information (title, album, artist, elapsed and remaining time, data rate, file format, / sample rate of number of bits) at any time on its large dot-matrix display is available.
Hearing test plant research served as the fabulous transparent, this totally natural and unobtrusive, phonetically virtually non-existent before end combination of passport (page 124), as already in the audio associated with proven KEF reference 207/2. The Akurate DS itself in this necklace added as the perfect player extension of pass components: totally transparent and neutral, without any Sonic irregularity with the exception of a phenomenon: no matter what conventional CD player at the entrance to the adjacent precursors was plugged in – it was always the speling, sounded in direct comparison of full, diverse, rich. This difference is not to describe quantitatively. The Linn “made” not simply more height, more bass, a broader or deeper stage. On the contrary, who was looking for width, was better off with the audio research, fanatic friends of the evacuation in turn would have probably preferred an Accuphase.
It was no more or less of anything, any shift in emphasis, which awarded the DS, but rather the total absence of such gravity. “Acadie”, the first solo album of master producer of Daniel Lanois, surprised with an enormous complexity of overtones, let in the soft metal swinging out of the guitar strings, up to the last intricacies and oddities of the Lanois typical sound design to traced. The performance therefore “surprised” because this album was one of thousands of times both as LP and CD quite above always had a slightly diffuse note. Sabina Sciubba, who had already impressed about the audio research, seemed now even more shrewd, more spontaneous and smarter to interpret their parts – the author felt almost at once to be powerful Italian language at “Estate”.
Already his smaller brothers convinced the Akurate not by great HiFi show, but by clarity and expressiveness. In addition to the half as expensive Majik DS (AUDIO 11/08, 125 points) sets out the Akurate substance and calm, but strongly resembles him in his ability to bring melodies, phrasing, and rhythmic emphasis in a way from the inside. Sometimes you could have sworn to hear just another CD than that which lies in the comparison player. But it doesn’t. Only the way of data – via a secure RIP process of the disc is played, another is cute in the FLAC format, stored on a hard drive and sucked from there via a LAN cable in the network front end of the player -. It is a detour for the bits. But for the music, transporting these bits, means the DS concept a giant step on the handset to.
