Review: Sony Ericsson Satio

Satio is the result of the ambitious project, which is a big step for the manufacturer. Because Sony Ericsson says goodbye with this smartphone even more of its previously used Symbian user interface. Instead of UIQ, the new Symbian platform is first used on the Sony Ericsson Satio. She should stop the mess with incompatible interfaces such as S60 or UIQ.

Symbian S60 look

The 5th version of the S60 interface is used as the basis of the new Symbian platform. Who ever had a S60 model with touch screen in the hands, will navigate quickly with the Sony Ericsson Satio. It is operated via the high-resolution touch screen, which is slightly longer, but much narrower than for the Apple iPhone. The display responds to gentle pressure, is to use also by pen or finger nail. The interface is designed so that consistently meets the finger control. The Satio displays different keyboards for typing text, use sense can be only the QWERTY keyboard in landscape mode.

The operating concept is S60 in the core, at the standby screen, Sony Ericsson has however vigorously applied hand. Offers four additional views: one shows full screen photos taken on another three the most important applications, contacts and Internet addresses can be each drop. Otherwise, Symbian revealed here as a system grown over years, which on the one hand, very flexible, on the other hand but also vigorously is shot in the herb. The newcomers must focus here, we often list hides the button “Options”.

Minor annoyances come to the fullness of function: switches the menu shown in the list format in the Setup menu, is suddenly a double asked where until there was enough a simple click. And occasionally the system issues, such as when it is more busy when you install programs, no relevant response. Then the user remains somewhat uncertain: the Satio has recognized my input? Automatically rotates in the appearance, as soon as you horizontally aligns the Sony Ericsson Satio, also often caused confusion. Both the tester and the Satio itself – that can be but just turned off. Total you can become friends with the operation, love feels different at first glance.

Scope of delivery

Where we are now with the bleating: Sony Ericsson starts up again on a proprietary connector for headset and data cable. Which is attached to the side also impractical and lacks the usual adapter for the connection of headset with 3.5 mm jack. That is no CD or DVD, it does not matter, because Sony Ericsson grabbed the software and detailed operating instructions on the enclosed card. Here relies on the common MicroSD format Sony Ericsson and is generous with an 8 GB card.

12 megapixels for a Hallelujah

A good workmanship is on the plus side for the Sony Ericsson Satio. And of course the typical for Symbian devices powerful facilities together with a special highlight: after Samsung with its Pixon12, Sony Ericsson here presents the next 12 Megapixler. The nominal resolution is still no good pictures and the actual resolution, which can be seen in the photos, is always below what the manufacturer promises. Actually we had to look very closely in the test, to detect a difference between a 5 and a 12-megapixel resolution at all.

Nevertheless, convinced the camera of Sony Ericsson Satio. The picture quality is good in ordinary light, a Xenon Flash helps in bad, the camera instantly raises and offers, when it comes to times quite turbulent, the best-PIC mode known from other Sony Ericssons, who shoots a rapid sequence and to the selection of the best photos. Only the auto focus might work a little faster and the macro for extreme close-ups hidden under the auto focus settings. The phone with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels and 30 frames per second will record videos – this is VGA quality, the movies run smoothly; the sound is something bright in a quiet environment, but overall good.

Music and movies

We have already complained via the headset connection. That the music player offers no equalizer, you can get over himself in the face of otherwise good sound. Also that built-in speaker sounds quite thin, didn’t bother us – from the Ghettoblaster age we are. The Sony Ericsson Satio offers its own menu of media for music, videos and photos, the music player is also accessible in the home screen. The player now offers the usual sort criteria, as well as direct access to Sony Ericsson’s online store play. All formats dominate the music such as the video player. When viewing movies, the quality of the brilliant display comes closest to the validity. Also YouTube movies are beautiful – you should enjoy that for cost reasons but only with data flat or via Wi-Fi.

Messages and browser

The browser can cope with large Web sites, links to the versions optimized for cell phones still are predefined to popular services like Facebook or Flickr. The Satio via a detour can be HTML-mails: the HTML version is to each message as an attachment. Who wants to professionally use the Satio, RoadSync is installed to connect to Exchange Server. With Quickoffice can open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files, but not edit. A PDF Viewer is played as a 15-day trial. Generally, the last gaps can be closed with additional software. Sony Ericsson’s shop play now offers a small selection of applications and games. Of House is the Navigation software Wiseman pilot on board a GPS receiver along with a trial version.

Endurance and reception

The Sony Ericsson Satio showed in the laboratory good transmission and reception properties, the battery falls with a capacity of almost 1000 mAh capacity given the equipment and the large display slightly too small for. As usual for touch screen devices, the Sony Ericsson Satio for intensive use must after a day at the outlet. A direct hit is Sony Ericsson failed, but a good camera phone.
