PIEGAS new flagship master one (30000 euros the pair) with special sex appeal: you comes in the medium frequency range as a true dipole.

You must certify the Swiss loudspeaker manufacturer Piega rightly that it builds with the most perfect body in the world market. The aesthetically shaped body of sound usually consist of extremely stiff, bonded aluminium profiles and are sent bracing on the basis of long-term trials damped. And yet development leader Kurt Scheuch couldn’t an idea out of your head: perhaps even no housing is the best housing… Half of the emitted sound energy of a driver – equal, whether high -, medium -, or woofer – goes Yes backwards. Since you usually but did not want her and therefore rear flanges to housing. SCHEUCH: “of course this energy fizzles out sometime in the insulation material of the box. “But until then the reflections can cause all sorts of damage.”
In particular, when almost the entire transmission range is transferred from an extremely sensitive area of sound like the Ribbon coax C1. This exception sound emitter, whose Hochtöner is located exactly in the middle and on the same level as the Central sound membrane measures 15 x 15 cm – it’s the perfect realization of the idea of point sound source. That it can be used alongside starting at 400 hertz and produces over 100 decibels of sound pressure, emphasizes the class of the system. Its extremely high degree of efficiency is the product of very strong magnetic drive and very light-weight Cone: the film of the C1 is only 0.02 mm strong.
So we’re back to the above problem of housing. Is clear that such a thin Membränchen irritated by reflections from the housing faster and more sustainable than painfully heavy bass membranes.
So just leave the housing, or? So easy you can’t then also again. Nowhere near enough in the bass. There you need to counteract the early onset extinction – the shell, or a special construction with much surface as at the jamo 909 (test 12/05). But also in the medium frequency range as a dipole is a complex structure. SCHEUCH: “first we let go the coax to the front and rear right. That was scary. In the middle of the ugly camber arises there is.” With glued-on felt strips on the back of the diaphragm, quasi, the mids are throttled now a mechanical equalizer.
As for the mid-high range speakers SCHEUCH used also in the bass of the master one at the previous flagship CL 120 X (test: 9/08, 64 points). The two massive 9-inch bass from scan speak he donated however his dipole project a much larger (82 to 60 litres) bass reflex housing.
Ever the case: because they have decades of experience in dealing with aluminum, a treat managed the Swiss – once again – haptic and sound a work of art. The bass case has a good ratio of low weight and high rigidity. The baffle has a softer, absorbing core though, but so hard and stiff that the coax is extremely tightly bound; This is not feasible with wooden cabinets, always something to say.
And also the technical development seems as clean as the body: smooth frequency response, as you will never see them at dipoles a la Magnepan or quad. Also of the maximum level of nearly 110 decibels, as well as the lower cut-off frequency of 30 Hz, fans of just that full-range dipoles can dream just ecstatic. As well as the efficiency of the master one: with its 85 decibels and at least 3.5 Ohm impedance puts them at least electrically no higher requirements for the (hopefully good) amplifier.
Only when establishing the Piega is demanding not one whit of less: at least 1.5 meters distance to rear wall inviting them, otherwise she would not sound. Most strongly right angle to be: hours, we moved the master one around in the listening room, and each change was audible.
But the Piega rewarded the effort – with sound images of breathtaking depth and stability. When Joshua Samson’s “Carribean shake” (audible lifestream / VIA Jazz) we literally could walk between the musicians, so vividly the master one shaped instruments. And that was by no means only the dipole radiation, but also the fantastic resolution of the midrange coax. Just the percussion of “Carribean shake” exploded literally – so lifelike the Piega hurled the impulses in the listening room. In comparison to the Canton reference 1.2 DC (stereoplay 9/09) went the Piega rather run out of steam, and it was not always in all situations so confidently neutral: men’s voices had not this substantial power as about the canton. But the non-slip, the airiness of good shots, short: the fun of the music experience, which gave the Piega significantly greater.
And so, the master one also to the phonetically similar sister CL 120 X behaves. It is easier to set up and the master one is undoubtedly cheaper – fascinating and binding in the music.
stereoplay: Mr Scheuch, after 23 years of Piega history you try for the first time a dipole. Why?
Kurt SCHEUCH: The idea has long been obsessed about me. I think housing always degrade the sound. Without housing one – has done right – always an increase in dynamic.
stereoplay: Now there are so many incumbents of dipole as Martin Logan or Magnepan on the market. Where is a Piega dipole better?
Kurt SCHEUCH: Whether we are better, the market decides. Sound beneficial, it is certain that the surface of the C1 is much smaller than in so-called area spotlights and he works as a point sound source. Also the statement because of the relatively high coupling (400 hertz, the editorial staff) is critical than at full-range dipoles.
stereoplay: The Assembly is equal, the housing is similar to: the master one is just the open version of the CL 120 X?
Kurt SCHEUCH: No. We have to increase the bass quality compared to the CL 120 X again and of course because of the special dipole radiation one other complete vote.
stereoplay: But why is the master one to 5000 euros more expensive?
Kurt SCHEUCH: The case is more complex and thus more expensive. In addition the building of a master one lasts longer: for the production of a few CL 120 X we need – you know, we do everything in hand work – eight for the master one ten days. It will cost…
