The New Samsung Gear S3 Proves That Tizen Is More Alive Than Ever

The presentation of the new Samsung Gear S3 Frontier and Classic has allowed to know the new members of the family of smart watches from Samsung, but above all has made one thing clear: that the commitment to Tizen is still very strong in Samsung.
The announcement of these devices is coupled with the recent presentation of the Samsung Z2, a low-cost smartphone specifically oriented to the Indian market that is also based on Tizen. Maybe on Samsung phones I have it complicated before the omnipresent Android, but things are not so clear in a segment as the smartwatches in which Android Wear does not have that same privileged position.

On Mobile There Is No Chance; In Smartwatches, Yes

It is true that most smart watches are based today on Android Wear, but so is the competition in this market is much more open. Apple is the one that sold more in the second quarter of the year, and the only one that approached to him was Samsung. However the variety was imposed here, as indicated by IDC data:
This table shows four different platforms (watchOS, Android Wear, Tizen, Garmin) used by the five biggest manufacturers at the moment, but there are other devicessuch as those manufactured by Pebble or Sony-which has just presented its FES Watch , A smart clock in full force-that also have their own bets in this sector.
Although it is clear that Android Wear is the main alternative to watchOS currently, market shares are distributed much more than in the field of smartphones, and that is why proposals like Tizen continue to make sense. The Samsung mobile platform can take advantage of the fact that none of these devices stand out especially about the rest.
Manufacturers Must Show That Watches Are More Than Hype
The essential problem of this segment is, as the IDC figures showed, that seems to be on the downside. Smart watches sold 32 percent less in the second quarter of 2016 than in the same period in 2015 (Apple sold 55 percent of its share at that time), and device ads have dropped significantly. Manufacturers must prove that watches are more than hype, and Tizen is Samsung’s way of showing.

Apps And Smartphone Independence

Smart watches are interesting accessories for a mobile, and often its users emphasize that clear advantage they offer: one takes the phone out of the pocket less thanks to the notifications that appear in these devices. Applications begin to take advantage of these devices, but even assuming extensive catalog-Samsung claim that there are already more than 10,000 applications for Tizen in smart watches – many of them are actually spheres ( watchfaces ) that allow you to customize the look of the watch
However, the same thing happens as when the smart watches appeared in the market: for many there is not just a definite reason to invest the 399 euros that for example costs the Samsung Gear S3. The problem may lie precisely in the fact that smart clocks and the platforms that control them-including the included – do not offer too much autonomy (understood as independence of the phone).
That is precisely one of the keys with which Tizen could play in the future. Already last year we saw how the Gear S2 offered a variant with eSIM card, and the new Gear S3 Frontier also add LTE connectivity through a card of this type.Unfortunately it will not be available in Europe at the moment, but these cards offer the key to not rely on the phone if we do not need it for much longer periods and in many scenarios where it was hopelessly out of pocket.
Both Apple and Google seem to also point to that future in which smart watches are more independent of the phone. Waiting for what arrives with the Apple Watch 2 in the coming months, in Android Wear we have smartwatches that have also offered that kind of connectivity. For now, not even that factor seems to have driven sales, but the truth is that this type of capacity and the limited availability of eSIMs mean that there is still a long way to go in this regard.

Beyond Mobile Phones And Watches

Tizen has been evolving over the years with a very versatile behavior: when he was born in 2012 he did with alternative dyes to Android on smartphones, but from there he jumped to some Smart TVs as well as smart clocks with devices such as the amazing Gear S2 last year.
In Tizen 3.0, the new version of the platform that was announced in April in San Francisco, there is a new ground to conquer : the Internet of Things. Samsung estimates that there will be 21 billion devices connected to the market by 2020, and its platform is compatible with Artik development boards.
The idea here is to cover all platforms – or almost – and new features such as support (finally) Bluetooth 4.2 or the inclusion of APIs for facial recognition promise to be very useful to developers. Google seems to be working on Fuchsia for this area, while Microsoft has Windows 10 as a big bet on trying to conquer that future hyperconnected.
Here the unknowns are even greater than in the field of intelligent clocks: there are even more platforms and proposals of all kinds of manufacturers – Intel is another of the protagonists – and what we have seen to date makes it difficult to think that resolution of the Internet of Things is as close as they want us to believe. If it is there is one thing clear: Samsung and his Tizen will try to be in it.
