The Tradition of the Wedding Ring

Today, we can’t imagine a civil marriage or religious without exchanging solemn and moving marriage alliances. But we know to whence this tradition?

A promise, a ring
The most remote origin of a union between two people seems to go back in the early hours of humanity, when fiancés passed their fingers through the natural hole of a sacred stone. More recently, in the seventh century, in the Scandinavian countries, reported that the engagement were confirmed by the husband who, passing his hand through a wide ring, shook the hand of the bride.
The use of thering was, especially in ancient times, great importance and even a legal value, admitted in court as a witness and a symbol of the most important acts, such as the promise of marriage and the institution of heirs.
In ancient Rome, the use of rings is to unite a man and a woman, according to rrrjewelry.com. We found texts that evoke a custom whereby the fiance was sent to his fiancee a ring as a token of the promise of a marriage. The social status of the spouses was a condition for the material in which the rings were made. Depending on whether you are servant or noble, we wore iron, bronze, silver or Gold.
In the middle ages, we exchange rings just as proof of a mutual affection, symbol of the union of hearts but not as an official contract.
The gold rings always preference and social condition of the spouses which required the use of less noble metals such as silver. At the 15th century, in Ireland, a marriage consecrated with rings that were not in Gold was worthless… This is how we saw being born the ‘rental’ of Gold rings to allow all classes to marry!
In many countries, the use of thering was introduced with Christianity even if this ritual is of pagan origin. Reforms introduced in the practice of the Catholic Church allowed priests to officially bless the wedding rings.
Today in France, the exchange ofring became a must ritual, either religious or civil marriage and is the most powerful symbol of a mutual promise.
Since the beginning of the nineteenth century, the term wedding ring has been gradually replaced by marriage Covenant. We find in the dictionary of Maurice Châtre, 1853 edition the following definition: ” Alliance : S. F. ringGold or silver composed of two circles together and that the woman carries to the left ring finger.” Ex.: buy an alliance, to bless an alliance, wear on your finger an alliance. ». It should be noted that at this time, an alliance known as “opening” was composed of two rings held against the other, which allowed to engrave a secret message… Tradition that is perpetuated by engraving the inside of the ring current. We’ll make soon an article on engravings, personal messages…
