With the Mattel 3D printer, children should implement their own toy ideas. The price is under $ 300.
With the ThingMaker Toy maker Mattel has a 3D printer for children on offer. The price of 299.99 US dollars an app for iOS and Android is included with which templates to select for new figures and accessories and have it sent to the printer wirelessly. In the app are already dozens of Blaupausen of rings, chains, dinosaurs or skeletons.
The children can also create their own figures that are compatible with the plug-in system.Mattel is targeting young customers over 13 years of age. The target group requires some safety measures. Thus, the printer door closes automatically when it is in operation. The print head is also folded backwards to prevent burns.
According to Mattel, the ThingMaker is compatible with standard filament. The manufacturer also wants to bring their own materials in bright colors on the market. With a 1-kilogram coil, the printer can print up to 20 figures, 30 or 100 rings. The delivery of the 3D-printer from printerhall.com intended for children is scheduled to take place in autumn. Pre-orders for ThingMaker will still be possible via Amazon.

Mattel is pursuing a long-term strategy with the 3D printer: the low-cost device is designed to allow children to print new accessories for their Barbie or Hot-Wheels collection. Concrete plans for this are not yet available. Aslan Appleman, senior director at Mattel, describes the printer’s approach to USA Today very well: “It’s almost magical to watch the printing process. But for bigger prints, it’s a good idea to start the night with a brand new toy.”
