GMAT, TOEFL AND MOTIVATION

Sascha Meissner's goal was to learn more about business when he applied for an MBA at the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HHL). Read how the former competitive athlete mastered the application marathon.

At first everything was very easy because it was easy for me to choose a business school. Then the application preparations started. As early as November 2010, I started compiling all the necessary documents for the application so that I could submit them in April 2011.

First came the preparation for the GMAT. For this management test, I sat down and learned for several months after work. I was very ambitious because I really wanted to get a high score. Then I got 660 points and I was satisfied with my performance. It was much easier for me to prepare for the TOEFL language test after this marathon. Thanks to the intensive preparation for the GMAT, my English skills were already optimally trained.

THE MOTIVATION

Then it was the turn of the letter of motivation. Typical questions included: Why an MBA? And why at this school? There was also a personal part in which I had to explain what I can give the class. To answer this question, I used my five years of IT consulting experience and the competitive sport I was doing at the same time. As a consultant, I was trained in analytical and structured thinking. I demonstrated my time management skills, discipline and endurance with competitive sports. I was able to highlight my intercultural skills through my semester abroad at the University of Georgia and my later IT project in India.
I received the two required letters of reference from two of my former professors from Germany and the USA. I had a pretty good connection with them during my studies.

THE MBA INTERVIEW

After I sent the application documents off, the invitation for a personal interview came relatively quickly. My interlocutor was Dean of HHL at the time. We talked about my career so far, my interests and political issues. Part of the conversation was even in English. Applicants who are from abroad are often allowed to conduct their interviews via Skype so that they do not have to travel to them. I know from other students that they had to solve case studies or brain teasers. For example, the question was: How many golf balls fit on a bus? Fortunately, I was spared that.

I have heard from fellow students that the application process will probably focus more on the interview in the future. Social skills are indispensable in a degree program that thrives on teamwork, dialogue and discussion.

CONFIRMED IN THE DECISION

Before the interview, I was also allowed to attend a guest lecture. This was organized by the responsible recruiting manager at the business school. I was in frequent contact with her during the application process. In doing so, I learned that when applying, there is no harm in signaling interest and sometimes showing presence on site. You can also familiarize yourself with the surroundings.

For foreign MBA students there is also a special orientation week and preparatory German courses. Fortunately, after the guest lecture had further strengthened my decision, I soon got the promise: Admission to the MBA course starting in September 2011. Done!
