MBA in Media Management

The media industry has always had great professional appeal. It's easy to get into the industry, but as your career grows, personal management skills and basic management skills count. How can media innovations be used successfully and profitably? How do TV stations make money when video-on-demand platforms increasingly attract more viewers? And how can the conversion from a publishing house to a media house be successful? These are fundamental business challenges for which you not only need good ideas, but above all very good business and management know-how.

A media MBA, usually offered as a media management course, can convey exactly this knowledge. However, it does not necessarily have to be a Media Management MBA, perhaps a General Management MBA would also be more suitable for your career perspective. Dozens of media courses are offered in Germany. A large part of it, namely the media management courses, deals with the entrepreneurial challenges in the media industry. The bachelor's programs prepare for the start of a career and the first steps on the career ladder.

However, this basic knowledge must be refreshed and supplemented in the course of working life. Training is very important, especially in a fast-moving industry like the media. A media MBA is the right decision if you are really career-oriented and want to lay the foundation for a career in middle or top management.

When choosing the right media MBA degree, two aspects are important:

  • What is your first degree and
  • what are your professional goals?

Option 1: Specialized MBA studies

In Germany and neighboring countries there are some specialized courses such as the MBA Media Management or MBA New Media and Information Management that specifically combine business knowledge with media know-how. These courses are particularly suitable for career changers and those who have not completed a media management degree.

During the course, mostly in the first two semesters, business contents such as the basics of business and economics, law, controlling, marketing and project management are taught. The second part of the MBA media studies is made up of media-specific content: media policy, online marketing and social media, market and trend research, media production and distribution are on the curriculum depending on the university.

Option 2: General Management studies

If you already have academic media knowledge, a generalist MBA can also be the right choice. Because then you "only" deepen the management knowledge, but this more intensively.

Fazit: Both options of a media MBA degree are useful for (prospective) media managers. You should therefore compare the content of your studies when you are spoiled for choice and also ask yourself where your professional development will be in five to ten years. If you want to stay in the media industry, you can do a specialized MBA with a clear conscience. If you are thinking of changing industries at some point, you are probably better off with a generalist degree.

Study forms and course

There are two different variants of the MBA in Media Management:

Part-time classroom study The lectures take place mainly on weekends as "classic" face-to-face classes with a student group at the university. Ideally, the place of study is not too far from your place of residence / work to avoid driving a lot. You also have to motivate yourself to study at the weekend after a hard week of work. Advantage: It is easier for many to learn in a group.
Full-time study The course takes so much time that full-time employment is impossible. The lectures take place on workdays during the day. You have to do without a fixed salary for several semesters and lead a student life again.
