THE MOST ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY BUSINESS SCHOOL
Environmental awareness is growing steadily,
even at business schools. The Rotterdam
BusinessSchool wants to make the
Greening RSM initiative the world's most environmentally
friendly business school.
Two German households consume an average of 6500
kilowatt hours of electricity per year. The Rotterdam
School of Management saved the same amount of
electricity last year. The “Greening RSM” initiative
called on the university's cooperation to switch off
their computers outside of working hours.
Similar efforts have been made before. The Reims
Management School, for example, was already working on
reducing its paper, water and CO2 consumption in 2010
and focused on recycling and organic products in the
cafeteria. With their green projects, many universities
are striving for an award in Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED). This certification program
assesses environmentally friendly buildings.
STUDENT INITIATIVE FOR A GREEN UNIVERSITY
The “Greening RSM” initiative,
founded in 2010, aims to raise awareness among students,
teaching staff and other staff about the sustainable use
of the environment and resources, both inside and
outside the business school. This should make the RSM
the most environmentally friendly business school in the
world.
The university initiative is based on three
pillars. The "Steering Group" is working on the
strategic direction of the initiative. The "Greening
Team" looks for and develops new, green ideas and the
"Working Groups" then take care of the successful
implementation of the measures in the areas of teaching
& research, communication and building equipment.
IDEAS FOR ENERGY SAVING AND RECYCLING
In order to do something good for the environment,
the initiative not only encourages saving
electricity. Paper consumption is also expected to
decrease. In addition, the university's copiers and
printers will in future only use recycled paper. A
project with which the University of Harvard already
increased its recycling rate to 53 percent in 2009.
“Greening RSM” pursues a good idea, which other
schools have already had. Earlier, several business
schools began installing solar panels on their roofs,
improving the insulation of buildings, and saving water
and electricity. Without the ambitious goal of becoming
the most environmentally friendly business school in the
world.
Nevertheless, the initiative is on the right track to
raise awareness of how easy it is to save electricity
and money. But there are many more and bigger steps to
take before the world's most environmentally friendly
business school.
