Almost everyone knows what the three letters stand for. But do you also know how the MBA story started? We'll tell you in our overview.

The MBA is not a new invention: it was first awarded in 1902 at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. The goal: The American economy should continue to be competitive through well-trained managers.

Word got around about the success of the educational revolution. Only a little later, the MBA was also offered at English universities. Although he was initially in the shadow of the bachelor's degree, the course gained increasing structure from 1950 onwards. Funding and marketing courses were established across schools to ensure quality. Even then, soft skills such as motivation and leadership style were an integral part.

year event
1900 The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College is offering training courses for managers for the first time
1902 The first Master of Science in Commerce, a prototype of the MBA, is awarded
1908 Harvard offers the first MBA program
1915 Wendell Thomas Cunningham, son of a former slave, is the first African-American to do his MBA in Harvard
1921 The first business school in China opens with the Shanghai University of Commerce
1924 Harvard introduces the case studies
1943 Chicago Booth offers the first Executive MBA program
1957 INSEAD in Fountainebleau becomes a pioneer for the MBA in Europe
1973 The oil crisis and the weakening economy in the USA discredit the supposedly too profit-oriented MBA
1986 Roy E. Crummer Business School at Rollins College, Florida, introduces the use of laptops for all students
1990 The Saarland Europa Institute offers the first completely German MBA
since 2008 The consequences of the subprime crisis in the USA bring sustainability and ethics to the curriculum

The 1960s and 1970s were not easy for the MBA programs, which critical studies had to accuse, of being out of business and too theoretical. Nevertheless, the interest in this educational offer increased continuously, which was accompanied by a constant improvement of the curriculum. However, since the degree still has the reputation of producing unscrupulous and materialistic managers, the importance of teaching social skills has increased in recent years. And although the USA is still the cradle of the MBA, the European offer with over 250 programs has developed rapidly in Germany alone and blossomed into a real alternative.
