MBA in Sports Management

Would you like to qualify for a further career in the sports industry or acquire additional sports economics know-how? An MBA such as sports management or sports economics could be the right way. Below you will find all the information you need, from basic knowledge (requirements, costs, part-time distance learning or full-time, etc.) to a list of all universities and MBA sports courses.

Sport is omnipresent and a huge global business. According to the Federal Ministry of Economics, consumption in Germany alone is almost 90 billion euros a year. Almost 6 billion euros are spent annually on advertising, sponsorship and media rights. A huge market in which specialists in a wide variety of industries and professional areas are sought.

A sports MBA (usually referred to as sports management or sports economics) can increase your chances of successfully developing in this industry and helps you stand out from bachelor and “normal” master graduates of the numerous sports courses.

What you should know about your studies

Sport has long been much more than just physical activity. From fitness apps to sports clubs and sports TV stations to sponsoring and marketing agencies - everyone lives from the business with the movement or fascination that sports exudes. Business thinking, coupled with specialist knowledge and passion for sport are prerequisites that aspiring managers need in this field.

The MBA Sport Management prepares you for these tasks. Several universities in Germany currently offer corresponding MBA courses. Except for the specialized MBA Motorsport Management from HS Kaiserslautern, the course content is basically similar: business know-how (business administration, marketing, controlling) is combined with sports management (e.g. club management, sponsoring, sports law).

Wichtig zu wissen: The difference between the sports management MBAs lies above all in the precise content (sometimes there are additional legal subjects, sometimes more sports content) and the type of study. Here you should definitely carefully compare all relevant courses or universities .

Study forms and course

There are two different variants of the MBA in Sports Management:

Sport MBA as ... Procedure Requirement
Part-time classroom study The lectures take place mainly on weekends, sometimes evenings in the week, "classically" as face-to-face lessons with a student group in the university. Ideally, the place of study is not too far from your place of residence / work to avoid driving a lot. You also have to motivate yourself to study at the weekend after a hard week of work. Advantage: It is easier for many to learn in a group.
Distance learning They teach the majority of the teaching content themselves at home using study books, digital aids, etc. In some cases there are supplementary face-to-face courses. It is important to be able to motivate yourself to learn - many underestimate this. The workload is approximately 10-15 hours per week over approximately 2 years. Advantage: You are absolutely flexible in terms of space and time.

There are big differences between the study forms in terms of the course and duration of the Sport MBA course. The universities in Bayreuth and Jena rely on part-time weekend studies. The lectures take place from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon. The duration of the study is the same: 4 semesters, i.e. two years.

Other universities, such as the IST University or Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, offer the MBA Sport Management as a distance learning course. The duration is 5 semesters. Various attendance dates round off the self-learning phases.

Requirements

You can even study for an MBA in sports management without a first degree, i.e. without a bachelor's or diploma , and in a distance learning course at the universities of Koblenz and Kaiserslautern. The prerequisite for this is a university entrance qualification, several years of professional experience and passing an entrance test.

Those who already have a bachelor's or similar degree in their pocket have a free choice of where the sports MBA should be taken. In principle, you should have at least one year of professional experience . Some universities also have to pass an entrance test.

Costs

An MBA is not cheap: investing in knowledge costs money. But this is well laid out, as the testimonials show.

Part-time face-to-face studies are more expensive than distance learning, as can be seen in the MBA Sport Management:

  • IST University : 10,800 euros
  • Uni Jena : 13,000 euros
  • Uni Bayreuth : 15,600 euros
  • Koblenz University of Applied Sciences : 9.00 euros
  • Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences : 7,990 euros
  • German University for Prevention and Health Management: 9,360 euros

There are also additional costs, for example for travel, overnight stays at the place of study or stays abroad. After all, the high costs can be deducted from the tax.
