MBA in Sales Engineering
What is the best way to sell high-tech products? By
being familiar with the details. If you want to expand
your skills as a sales engineer and qualify for special
management positions, you can be well advised with an
MBA in sales engineering. But there are also suitable
alternatives. We have an overview.
Engineers - they're technicians. Mechanical engineer,
mechatronic engineer, packaging technician. And the
sales engineer? He is a quasi marketing specialist,
business manager and engineer in one union. His field of
activity is to explain technically sophisticated
products to potential customers and ultimately to sell
them.
Does that sound like a door cleaning job? It is not,
because the machines and products that engineers sell
are often several million euros expensive. The MBA Sales
Engineering can be the right qualification for anyone
who has already climbed the career ladder in this
profession and wants to move up or who is interested in
this profession as a career changer.
Several ways lead to the goal to work as a sales
engineer. There are some Bachelor and Master courses,
but also specializations in other engineering
courses. An MBA sales engineer is currently only
available at a few universities. If these are not an
option, there are also very good alternatives for sales
engineers who want to further qualify with the MBA.
Specialized MBA degree in sales engineering
Especially recommended for those who want to switch
from another profession and do not yet have the relevant
know-how. This could include sales managers or business
economists who want to expand their knowledge with
engineering skills. Even engineers who have not yet
chosen a specialization in sales during their first
degree could be right with an MBA sales engineer.
Vorteil: By focusing on the course, you are optimally
trained to work in this area.
Nachteil: Such a specialized MBA can be worth less if
you change the industry or the profession.
More general sales / sales MBA programs
Anyone who has completed an engineering degree,
brings along technical know-how and "only" wants to
expand his sales skills academically, can also get it
right with a general sales MBA.
You can find all information in our detailed article
on MBA Sales.
Generalist MBA
Originally, the Master of Business Administration was
intended as a wide-ranging management course with no
industry focus, so that engineers or scientists, for
example, can expand their rudimentary existing business
knowledge. Specializations, such as the MBA in sales
engineering, were added later.
A generalist MBA, such as the MBA General Management,
is therefore recommended, for example, for engineers who
already learned content in the field of sales during
their first degree. Or of course for those who have
completed a degree in sales engineering. You would
benefit less from a specialized MBA than from a general
one.
Course of study and duration
There are different study models for the
programs. For example, the MBA in Sales Engineering at
Kaiserslautern University is designed as a (part-time)
distance learning course. You learn the content using a
mix of different teaching media such as written
documents, e-learning units and face-to-face
seminars. The program lasts four semesters. At the zfh -
Center for distance learning in the university network,
you can also complete the MBA sales engineer as a
distance learning course. The MBA at Furtwangen
University, on the other hand, focuses on part-time
face-to-face studies. This means that the lecture times
are spread over approximately ten weekends (Friday and
Saturday) plus one attendance week per semester.
The standard period of study for generalist MBA
courses is between three and five semesters, depending
on the study model (full-time, part-time study or
distance learning).
Requirements
There is a special feature of the MBA sales engineer
at Kaiserslautern University: you can even enroll
without a first degree. The prerequisite is then the
university entrance qualification (Abi / Fachabi / etc)
plus three years of professional experience in a
suitable area plus passing an entrance test.
For prospective students with a first university
degree, the usual prerequisites for sales MBAs normally
apply: at least one year of employment and proof of
English language proficiency.
Costs
The cost of a Master of Business Administration in
sales engineering / sales engineering is in the
four-digit range:
- Furtwangen University: € 6,660
- University of Kaiserslautern: 8,000 euros
- zfh - Center for distance learning in the
university network: 8,400 euros
There are also travel expenses for stays abroad,
overnight stays at the place of study and teaching
material. Nevertheless, the MBAs are still one of the
cheapest study opportunities. Generalist MBA programs
usually cost between 15,000 - 50,000 euros.
After all, the high costs for the MBA can be deducted
from the tax.
