MBA in IT Management
Business studies combined with specialist knowledge
of information technology - this is how the IT
management course can be summarized. If you would also
like to complete a Master of Business Administration in
this area, we have all the information below for
you. From the prerequisites and costs to reports from
MBA IT management graduates. And of course a list of all
degree programs.
Information technology is an elementary part of the
business world. The strategic orientation of IT
therefore represents an essential area of
responsibility for management. The merging of
different IT systems (eg in the case of mergers), the
continuous maintenance and further development or the
defense against ever new digital dangers are areas of
application for IT managers.
The MBA IT Management conveys knowledge from the
areas of consulting, business administration,
information security and information systems. By
combining economic and IT content, MBA graduates are
able to take on managerial tasks based on economic
objectives and to engage in an efficient exchange with
IT specialists with different functions.
If you are interested in an MBA in the IT
environment, you currently have not too much
choice. However, the existing courses are characterized
by a high level of know-how transfer and very good study
conditions. Due to the topicality of the topic and the
increasing demand for experts in this area, there will
certainly be further IT Management MBA courses in the
future. Read more about whether an MBA is worthwhile in
our article " MBA for Computer Scientists / IT
Professionals ".
Forms of study
The MBA programs are only offered as part-time work,
especially as part-time face-to-face studies. You attend
lectures at the university at regular
intervals. Depending on the university and the planned
period of study, these attendance dates take place in a
different rhythm, usually either once or twice a month
at the weekend. Sometimes there are block courses over
4-6 days, which are carried out 1-2 times per semester.
The course is also available as an MBA IT Management
distance learning course. In any case, you have to work
through study documents in all degree programs as
self-study, i.e. flexibly at home. You are often
supported by blended learning approaches, in which the
analog study documents are supplemented by digital help
such as recorded lectures or podcasts. But there is also
a pure MBA distance learning course, in which no
face-to-face events are to be attended.
Course of study & duration
Depending on the university, the MBA IT Management
lasts between four and five semesters. The last semester
is usually only intended for the preparation of the
final thesis, so the lectures and distance learning
phases extend over a period of approx. 18-24 months.
Most courses are undergraduate, so IT management is
the core content of the course. However, there are also
generalist MBAs that offer a specialization option in
this area after a general undergraduate degree.
Requirements
The target group of IT Management MBAs primarily
include specialists and managers from the IT area or
related areas. Typical requirements for starting your
studies are:
- Completed university degree
- at least one to two years of professional
experience after graduation
- good English knowledge
However, there is also the possibility of studying
without a first university degree, for example at the
WBS Academy or the University of Potsdam.
Costs
The costs for an MBA IT management are on average of
all MBAs. Everything from around 9,000 euros to almost
20,000 euros is included. In addition to the tuition
fees, you should also consider any expenses incurred for
trips to the attendance dates and overnight stays /
meals on site when calculating the costs and
financing. The social contributions (approx. 150 euros
per semester) that some universities also charge are
negligible.
