MBA INTERVIEW WITH ALEXANDER MEYER ON THE HEYDE, BAYER BUSINESS
CONSULTING: "VERY ENRICHING EXPERIENCE"
Alexander Meyer auf der Heyde (41) heads the Bayer
Group's internal management consultancy. He first
studied biology at the University of Tübingen and began
his career in basic research at the Max Planck Institute
in Tübingen. At Accenture, he was responsible for
management consulting in the Pharmaceuticals & Medical
Products division as a partner in India and then
China. Meyer auf der Heyde received his MBA from the
European School of Business Reutlingen.
Firefighter, locomotive driver or doctor,
these are the dream jobs of many children: What did you
want to be when you were young?
My dream job changed over time, which probably applies
to most people. Towards the end of my school days, I
wanted to do basic research, so I decided to study
biology. I only remained loyal to research for a short
time, but I never regretted having studied what I was
most interested in - even if I have very little to do
with biology today.
Which decision did you make the most for your
career? I took up the offer of a former employer and
went to India. Then I took a position in China. From a
private perspective and from a career perspective, these
two decisions were certainly the best.
Why did you choose an MBA?
At the beginning of my career, I realized that I didn't
want to stay in basic research in the long term. In
conversations with acquaintances and representatives of
the industry, I then tried to answer the question of
whether I should prefer to do a doctorate to start in
the pharmaceutical industry or do additional economic
training. The answer was pretty clear. So I decided to
do an MBA.
Have there been moments when you have had
doubts about this decision?
No, I have never regretted this decision.
How do you deal with setbacks?
Of course it always says quite simply that you have to
learn from it. From my point of view, the hardest thing
is to accept a setback first and not only to look for
the mistake in others or in the framework. Once you have
done that, you have to look ahead.
The MBA is one of the most expensive training
courses. Did this investment pay off?
MBAs differ in part considerably in terms of costs. The
investment was worth it for my situation. However, all
those who are faced with such a decision should think
carefully about what they are intended to do. And they
should consider whether what they want to achieve with
the MBA is in line with the personal and financial
What have you learned from your MBA for life
and not for your job?
A very valuable aspect was to exchange ideas with
students from different countries. I had the opportunity
to look at global issues from a variety of angles. Doing
that and also getting to know cultural backgrounds for
different perspectives was a very enriching experience.
Which role models are you based on?
I think a lot about people who have managed to make an
outstanding career without having put themselves in the
foreground. Most of these are managers who care more
about the development of their own employees than their
When do you advise academics to get an MBA?
In my view, there are two main reasons to choose an MBA:
either to add a non-economic background or a commercial
component. Or to build or expand an international
network. The latter, however, depends very much on the
MBA school and on the individual ability to maintain and
use such a network with great personal commitment.
