MBA in General Management
Are you looking for a holistic management degree with
which you can prepare for management positions and / or
expand your business know-how? The MBA General
Management is the classic among the MBA courses. We have
compiled all the information below, from types of study
and costs to a list of all degree programs to reports
from graduates.
The MBA General Management is the classic management
training in the field of general corporate
management. The course includes all important functional
management areas such as accounting, controlling,
marketing, financing, personnel management or even
commercial law.
The course is useful for academics who are looking
for a management or management role, i.e. who want to
give their career a new direction or who already have it
and would like to deepen their knowledge. Thanks to its
(as the name suggests) the MBA is suitable for graduates
of all disciplines - from engineering to natural
sciences.
Basically you have two options when choosing an MBA:
Generalist MBA studies
This is the classic variant. The MBA was originally
developed for non-economists, such as natural sciences
and humanities and, above all, engineers. The general
management program is intended to convey the basic
business administration know-how that is needed to
advance further towards top management.
Specialized MBA degree
There are now numerous MBA programs that deal
intensively with an industry, such as health
management or logistics. These courses are also
worthwhile for graduated business economists. You can
find an overview of the different fields of study on our
page on MBA courses.
"General Management" - the name already indicates the
purpose of the course. The basic knowledge of business
administration is conveyed, from marketing to corporate
and personnel management to controlling. This content is
conveyed in a very similar form in a first degree in
economics (e.g. Bachelor in Business Administration,
Economics, Management, etc.). If you already have a
corresponding degree, the content of the MBA no longer
makes sense. Of course, this training can still be sold
well, because you have refreshed your knowledge and can
again fall back on modern management know-how.
The General Management MBA brings even more to those
who have little or no knowledge of business
administration. These include the natural scientists or
humanities, engineers, doctors or lawyers mentioned
above. If the path up the career ladder continues during
the course of your professional years and the tasks
therefore become increasingly "management-heavy" (e.g.
due to personnel or budget responsibility), such a
course of study can be exactly the right decision to
address the new challenges in a structured manner and to
master.
Forms of study
In no other area are there so many courses of study
and different types of study as with the MBA General
Management. Basically, the time models can be summarized
as follows:
The MBA distance learning is largely based on the
principle of self-study: The participants receive the
study documents by post or can access them online. To
support them, the universities usually offer e-learning
platforms on which one can exchange ideas with
lecturers, tutors and fellow students. Distance learning
is often supplemented by a series of face-to-face events
in which the students have to take part. These are
usually organized as block lessons. Depending on the
university, there is the possibility to complete the
distance learning in a full-time or part-time variant.
On the other hand, MBA participants regularly attend
events during part-time face-to-face studies, for
example as evening or weekend studies. To ensure
compatibility with the profession, these take place
either in the evening study of the week or on the
weekends. The participants deepen what they have learned
in parallel to the lessons in flexible time and space
self-study.
An option is of course also full-time study, where
students should live near the university and attend
lectures or seminars several times a week. However,
since the majority of MBA offers in general management
are part-time, there are very few full-time offers here.
Course of studies
It is very important that you study the MBA programs
that are relevant to you. Because the course of study
varies considerably from university to university.
Some examples:
The distance learning MBA General Management at the IUBH is
offered in two variants and with three study models
each. Anyone who has achieved 210 ECTS points in their
first degree can complete the 60 ECTS MBA in 1-2
years. The duration of the study depends on whether you
are doing the distance learning full-time (you have to
spend about 40 hours / week to study) or part-time. The
course is designed as an online course with 10 mandatory
attendance days.
The general management distance learning at the Euro-FH,
however, is designed for 2 - 3 years. Business people
can also shorten it to 16 months. In-class events are
not mandatory in the course of the course.
In addition, there are numerous part-time general
management MBA programs based on weekend classes and
on-site blocks. At the ISM University, for example,
around 70 attendance days are combined in blocks of one
week in the four semesters (Wednesday to Saturday or
Monday to Saturday). At the University of Kassel there
are 45 seminar days in 15 blocks (usually Friday morning
to Sunday afternoon). The MBA lectures at the Business
School of the University of Düsseldorf, on the other
hand, take place part-time usually on Thursdays and
Fridays between 6:00 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. and on Saturday
mornings between 9:00 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.
Requirements
If you want to study an MBA General Management, you
normally need a first academic degree and at least one
year of professional experience. Depending on the
language model, you have to go through a TOEFL or
IELTS or similar. Test the English language skills and
a GMAT to prove basic management suitability.
But there are also opportunities to get an MBA
directly without first degree. The Euro-FH and the Koblenz University
of Applied Sciences offer this option.
Costs
Investing in your education and career opportunities
isn't really cheap. The tuition fees are usually in the
five-digit range, plus additional costs for learning
material, possibly overnight stays at the place of study
(e.g. during the presence phases of a distance learning
course) and possible stays abroad.
Examples of tuition fees:
- IUBH distance learning: 11,387 - 16,403 euros
- GISMA: 22,000 - 25,000 euros
- Uni Kassel: 20,000 euros
- HWR Berlin: 11,200 euros
- AFW Bad Harzburg: 8,900 euros
- University of Erlangen-Nuremberg: 25,000 euros
