MBA Accreditation
In addition to the length of study and the different
program contents, the accreditation of a business school
can be seen as a not to be neglected decision criterion
for the choice of an MBA or master's degree program.
A special quality mark
The accreditation is always issued only by the
official side and confirms the high quality of the
training institution or a special
program. Accreditations are given either to a business
school or to individual study programs. Before an
accreditation is awarded, the respective school or a
specific course of course is of course examined
intensively and must meet all the requirements of the
test center.
Regular control
However, it does not stop at a one-off examination:
The school, the MBA or master's program will be closely
examined for quality assurance in the following years to
ensure that it remains the same. With an accredited
program, it can be assumed that the educational
institution, program and teachers have a high standard.
A seal of approval based on a worldwide
comparison
Accreditations are carried out in a standardized
manner and make the program and its contents
transparent. At the same time, it is easier to compare
with other international programs.
Accreditations for private training
institutes
In addition to the seal of approval for programs and
public educational institutions, there are also those
for private universities. The award is made, for
example, by the Science Council, which ensures that the
teaching and research offered at the relevant university
adheres to recognized scientific standards. In addition,
the material and staffing of the respective university
is checked.
What should you look out for in
accreditations?
Selected institutions in different countries are
responsible for the accreditation of study
programs. Normally, these were assessed by the
Accreditation Council. For courses outside the EU, you
should get a little more information. If the selected
MBA or master program has accreditation from the 4
agencies listed below, then the title should be
available across the EU. With other accreditation
agencies, it is highly recommended to consult the
responsible Ministry of Education in advance. In
practice, it unfortunately happens time and again that
degrees from so-called “top business schools” are not
permitted in the EU.
Special situation in Switzerland
Swiss state universities are generally
unproblematic. At a private university, you should
definitely pay attention to individual accreditation.
Good to know
Accreditation should not only be considered an
important aspect when choosing an MBA or master's degree
- the quality seal can also play a role in the
application to a future employer.
The 4 best known and most respected
accreditation agencies worldwide
AACSB (The Association to Advance Collegiate
Schools of Business / USA)
The AACSB is recognized by the United States
Department of Education and provides accreditation in
the areas of business and accounting. It accredits
institutions worldwide as a whole and not the individual
programs. Every program of an AACSB-accredited
university is of high quality. The AACSB enjoys the
highest international reputation. Of the 500 or so
institutions accredited by the AACSB, more than 60 are
located outside the United States. The only German
institutions so far accredited by the AACSB are the
University of Mannheim and the HHL - Leipzig Graduate
School of Management. More information can be found at: http://www.aacsb.edu
AMBA (Association of MBAs / GB)
Unlike the AACSB, the English AMBA evaluates
individual MBA programs. This can lead to a full-time
program of a business school being accredited by AMBA,
but the part-time program not. AMBA is also accredited
outside the UK. Around 90 programs are now allowed to
carry the AMBA seal of approval. More information can be
found at: http://www.mbaworld.com
EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System)
EQUIS is an accreditation launched in 1997 by the
European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) in
Brussels. The initiative was supported by the Commission
of the European Union; the drafting took place in close
cooperation with the already existing national and
European accreditation institutions such as B. the FIBAA
instead. More information can be found at: http://www.efmd.org
FIBAA (Foundation for International Business
Administration Accreditation)
FIBAA, founded in 1994 by five business associations
from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, is responsible
for evaluating MBA or master programs in German-speaking
countries. Anyone planning to do an MBA or master's
degree there should check whether the program they have
chosen bears the FIBAA seal. If you have an MBA or
Master's degree from a state university in Europe or
Australia (Commonwealth Contracts) and have received
academic recognition from it, you do not need this
accreditation because you already have academic
recognition due to the Bologna Contracts.
