MBA in Tourism / Tourism Management

Is the tourism industry your preferred career environment? With a tourism MBA, you can prepare for further career steps. Below you will find all the information, including an overview of the costs, study options (part-time, as distance learning or full-time) and alternatives. And of course we list all MBA courses. Testimonials from graduates also provide you with first-hand impressions and tips.

According to the study “Economic Factor Tourism” from 2012, the gross value added of the tourism industry is over 97 billion euros. Taking indirect and induced effects into account, the overall gross value added attributable to tourism is 214.1 billion euros. This corresponds to 9.7 percent of the total gross value added of the German economy.

Enough of the numbers: The tourism industry is an exciting job environment . And one should not only reduce this environment to the "typical" holiday tourism. Especially in the business travel segment, there are high sales and even greater challenges for companies to survive. With an MBA, you can prepare for it in a targeted manner. In the following there is all information about this special course.

What you should know about your studies

There are many exciting jobs in middle and top management in the tourism industry that depend on academic qualifications. Here an MBA Tourism (management) can or, alternatively, a generalist MBA, the decisive advantage be.

An MBA is primarily a business management degree. Over time, additional industry-specific MBAs were introduced, such as the tourism MBA. Which variant you choose mainly depends on your career goals:

Specialized tourism MBA degree

This is a basic business studies combined with diverse tourism-specific content. These include, for example, tourism marketing, tour operator management, destination management or health tourism. The course is usually supplemented by thematically related sectors such as event or hotel management.

Vorteil: Perfect combination of management studies and tourism content. Suitable for everyone who is looking specifically for a qualification to advance in the tourism industry.

Nachteil: If you switch to another industry, you won't benefit so much from the MBA.

Generalist MBA

These include MBA courses that deal specifically with basic business content and do not convey this using a specific industry. These usually include subjects such as marketing, human resources, economics, accounting, investment, controlling and corporate management.

Study forms and course

There are only a few tourism MBA courses at German universities. But there is the possibility to study at foreign universities - because the programs are offered as distance learning courses.

In principle there are three types of study in Tourism MBA :

Tourism MBA as ... procedure Requirement
Full-time study This is the "classic" course. You have a main job as a student and attend lectures on weekdays. Working, if at all, is only possible to a very limited extent. However, the study time is shorter than with other variants.
Part-time classroom study The majority of the course content is taught as a lecture or seminar. As a student, you are therefore obliged to sit in the lecture hall at certain times. These times are usually at the weekend (Friday to Sunday), but there are sometimes lessons for a whole week. The place of study should not be too far from your home, as you have to be there regularly.

Advantage: Learning through lectures and together with others is easier for many students than teaching themselves everything.
Distance learning They teach the majority of the teaching content themselves at home using study books, digital aids, etc. In some cases there are supplementary face-to-face courses. It is important to be able to motivate yourself to learn - many underestimate this. The workload is approximately 10-15 hours per week over approximately two years.

Advantage: You are absolutely flexible in terms of space and time.

There are big differences between the study forms in terms of the course and duration of the MBA course in tourism management.

Requirements

You can even start the Tourism MBA without a first degree. At the University of Koblenz and the University of Applied Sciences, Worms a registration is possible if one can demonstrate the university, several years of professional experience and a passed aptitude test. There are similar study requirements at the Danube University Krems, where no bachelor's or diploma is required.

All other universities require a first degree and several years of professional experience . In addition, an English certificate such as the TOEFL or the GMAT management test is required.

Costs

An MBA is never cheap. As an example, we have compiled the costs of various tourism MBAs:

  • Koblenz University of Applied Sciences : 9,600 euros
  • Danube University Krems : 11,900 euros
  • International Graduate Center (Bremen University of Applied Sciences) : 12,500 euros
  • Worms University of Applied Sciences : 19,200 euros

After all, the high costs can be deducted from the tax.
