MBA in Taxation
Taxation - a dust-dry career for those who have not
dealt with it in detail. For those who know their way
around, a career path with many opportunities and
numerous exciting fields of employment. If you are
interested in an MBA in the field of taxation, you have
come to the right place. We have compiled all
information about the course, listed all courses and
asked graduates for experience reports.
The principle of paying taxes has been around for
thousands of years - but tax law today is far more
complicated and multifaceted than it was when tax
collection began. Nowadays taxation describes
a combination of the areas of taxes and business and
economics.
Accordingly, in order to become an expert in this
area, extensive training is necessary. One of the
highest qualifications offered by the (Executive) Master
of Business Administration, which is primarily aimed at
academics from the field of law and economics, and both
tax consultants as well as for those who
are professionally in a different way with taxes and
finances have to do, represents an interesting further
education.
In the taxation / taxation area, there is currently
only a limited range of MBA courses. A classic MBA can
be obtained from the University of Freiburg, which
offers the "International Taxation" course. Another
option is the "Executive Master of Business
Administration" (EMBA) course in "Taxation" at
the University of Münster.
While the Master of Business Administration is aimed
primarily at academics who want to rise in management
positions, the EMBA appeals to applicants who are
already in managerial positions and who have extensive,
several years of professional experience in management.
Kleiner Exkurs: In addition to the MBA and EMBA, the
Taxation / Taxation division offers other degrees. Above
all, this includes the so-called LL.M. (Master of
Laws). This originally comes from the English-speaking
world, but is now also gaining ground in Germany. LL.M.
degree courses serve to deepen legal knowledge and
accordingly focus on a specialized legal area (in this
case, tax law). However, the degree can only be compared
with the MBA to a limited extent; it has a much more
theoretical focus and, in contrast to the MBA, deals
with very specific content. In addition, the topics of
business management and management play only a minor
role, if at all. Accordingly, the degrees are aimed at
different groups of people and also have different
objectives.
In terms of content, the (E) MBA courses deal
primarily with the various aspects of tax law. It not
only examines the legal situation in Germany, but also
in other European and non-European countries. The
curriculum accordingly includes modules such as
- Introduction and system of tax law
- General taxation
- International tax law
- International tax planning
- Tax project management
- Bookkeeping and balance sheet analysis
Study forms and course
In order to be attractive for working people, the (E)
MBA courses in the field of taxation / tax are offered
as part-time studies. The "International Taxation"
course combines face-to-face events with self-learning
phases. The lessons take place here in one-week block
phases; these take place a total of six times throughout
the course.
The EMBA "Tax Studies" course at the University of
Münster is organized in a similar way; however, the
presence phases take place here mainly on weekends. The
curriculum includes a one-week introductory course and
15 attendance weekends (from Thursday to Saturday
each). Regardless of differences in the study
organization, both courses have a duration of three
semesters.
Requirements
The (E) MBA courses "International Taxation" and "Tax
Sciences" are aimed at those who have already studied
law and economics and have one to several years of
experience in a relevant profession.
In order to take part in the MBA course
"International Taxtation", a successfully passed tax
consultant exam is also required. In individual cases,
this can also be replaced by specific practical
experience.
Costs
Anyone who enrolls for an MBA or EMBA course in the
field of taxation / tax should be aware in advance that
this is associated with relatively high costs.
Examples:
- University of Freiburg : 18,900 euros
- University of Münster : 12,600 euros
We certainly don't need to tell you that the MBA
costs can be tax deductible...
Tips for alternatives:
There are a few alternatives to the tax MBA. Above
all, if you do not want to train so "taxation-specific",
a general management degree can be the better
choice. All facets of business administration are dealt
with here - the graduates are accordingly fit in many
areas.
Otherwise there are of course other Masters of
Business Administration, which are also related to
finance. These include the areas of financial
management, insurance / insurance or controlling /
accounting.
