Both can promote a career: MBA and EMBA programs impart management skills and prepare for senior management positions. But what is the difference?

If you want to get to the top of the career ladder after your first degree, MBA or EMBA programs are interesting. And the two programs differ not only in the addition of "Executive".

Executive MBA programs require participants to have even more professional and managerial experience than the Master of Business Administration. Candidates should provide evidence of at least five, not infrequently even ten years when applying for a place on the course. Experience in management can also be part of the requirements. For comparison: Schools usually need two to three years of professional experience for MBA programs.
It is therefore not surprising that EMBA programs are mostly aimed at members of the executive board, department heads and managers of business units. With the EMBA you acquire additional knowledge for the overall management of companies worldwide. And so the average age for EMBA programs is often higher than for an MBA.

Management positions that EMBA candidates already hold would still like to reach MBA students. However, the programs do not only prepare for future management responsibilities. The cross-functional tasks of such positions are also part of the MBA.
An MBA study surveyed German and European business schools on the objectives of their MBA programs. The broadening of the career perspective and the strengthening of intercultural competence were at the top of the most frequently mentioned answers.

This was followed closely by the expansion of the network, increased intercultural competence and a change in professional orientation.

Pausing on the career ladder and back to university? Future EMBA students don't have to worry about that. Your studies are designed to be part-time and include a fixed number of face-to-face events and courses, which usually take place on weekends or can be scheduled in advance.
This advantage can also be used by MBA students who opt for one of the part-time offers. This extends their studies, but they can continue to work and do not have to accept loss of earnings.

MBA and EMBA programs have a high international orientation. After all, they prepare tomorrow's managers and managers for global challenges. Courses with an international orientation and a diverse student body, international case studies and stays abroad are therefore a central part of most programs.
EMBA programs are even more international than MBA programs. In most cases the language of instruction is English. And through cooperation with other business schools and companies, study visits abroad are almost a matter of course. In this way, top managers in particular can prepare themselves well for the management tasks of globally operating companies. The program also enables them to build up a large network with other professionals.

Both programs are challenging and place high demands on the participants. Lack of sleep, performance and time pressure are common side effects.
The Executive MBA requires a lot more effort, will and motivation. Weekends, holidays, vacations, leisure time are reduced to a minimum, because the preparation of the courses and attendance modules is very time-consuming. But if you do this degree alongside your job, you demonstrate a great deal of discipline, perseverance and commitment - and come a step closer to the top end of the career ladder.
