Studying in America was his big dream. Michael Kalkowski, born in 1973, did so at Eastern Illinois University. Today he is the chief creative officer and co-founder of the game platform Gameduell.

Firemen, locomotive drivers or doctors are the dream jobs of many children: What did you want to be when you were young?
My first career choice was filmmaker or producer. Later I wanted to go into advertising.

Which decision did you make the most for your career?
With my decision to study in the United States. I was particularly inspired by the pragmatic "can-do" mentality and pioneering spirit. In Germany, people often think too long and there are no doers. I try to live the American approach. It is also important to me that teams work responsibly and agile.

Why did you choose an MBA?
I wanted to go to America and the University of Cologne gave me an MBA scholarship at Eastern Illinois University.

Have there been moments when you have had doubts about this decision?
Never. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

How do you deal with setbacks?
I see it as something positive. They are valuable learning experiences and the building blocks of success. According to the motto "You never fail until you stop trying."

The MBA is one of the most expensive training courses. Has the investment paid off?
There are enough statistics to prove the return on investment. But it always depends on what you want to do professionally. If you want to become an entrepreneur, I would recommend studying at a well-known university. But it doesn't have to be an MBA.

What have you learned from your MBA for life and not for your job?
The benefit of studying for an MBA is less the specialist knowledge. Rather, it is the general skills that you learn. Among other things, the acquisition of social skills, the ability to solve problems independently and the training of perseverance were important to me.

Which role models are you based on?
With their philosophy of life I have above all entrepreneurs, visionariesand creative lateral thinkers - such as the publisher and best-selling author Darren Hardy, the musician Bob Marley and martial arts and film legend Bruce Lee. The successful Canadian trainer Robin Sharma and Richard Bandler, the developer of neuro-linguistic programming, are also great role models for me - and of course Apple founder Steve Jobs.

When do you advise academics to get an MBA?
If you are aiming for a career in senior management or as an entrepreneur, an MBA makes sense, but only after several years of professional experience.
