MBA INTERVIEW WITH STEFAN GROSS-SELBECK, XING: "EXPECTATIONS WERE NOT
DISAPPOINTED"
Stefan Groß-Selbeck (44), CEO of Xing, did his MBA at
Insead in Fontainebleau, France. After working as a
management consultant at the Boston Consulting Group and
then as a managing director at Kirch Intermedia,
Groß-Selbeck was CEO of Ebay.
Firemen, locomotive drivers or doctors are
the dream jobs of many children: What did you want to be
when you were young?
My first career choice was Indian chief - because of the
feather headdress.
Which decision did you make the most for your
career?
By opting for the broadest possible training. I
studied law and economics - and also looked a little
left and right. I don't believe in specialization too
early - specialization is important, but its half-life
is short and continues to decrease.
Why did you choose an MBA?
To be honest, mainly because I wanted to study at an
“elite university”. I had heard a lot about the
inspiring environment. And the expectation was not
disappointed.
Have there been moments when you have had doubts
about this decision?
Never. It was one of the most inspiring, educational,
intensive and beautiful phases of my life.
How do you deal with setbacks?
I think that over the years you have to build a certain
basic trust in yourself. Then failures no longer blow
you away. They are bitter anyway.
The MBA is one of the most expensive training
courses. Did this investment pay off?
It was an investment in me that has paid off in many
ways. Probably also in euros and cents, but I never
calculated that.
What have you learned from your MBA for life
and not for your job?
The value of diversity and the potential that some
bright minds can have.
Which role models are you based on?
On changing.
When do you advise academics to get an MBA?
If you have the chance.
