MBA for Women

Although the proportion of women in the MBA is increasing and more and more women are starting an MBA course at one of the top international schools, their proportion is small compared to the male students.

The proportion of women studying worldwide is currently 37.4 percent on average, which is less than 1.0 percent more than in the previous year. Internationally, schools - with the exception of schools in the United States - even saw a noticeable decline in 2018 from 36.2 to 35.1 percent. This is the conclusion reached by the FortÚ Foundation, a union of a total of 53 business schools and diverse companies that support women in their careers.

The proportion of women studying under the full-time MBA is less than 50 percent

Over a third (namely 19 of the 52 schools included in a survey) have at least 40 percent or more women in full-time MBA courses. In 2014 there were only three schools. The Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California was the first member of the FortÚ Foundation to achieve 52 percent. At Kellogg School of Management, 46 percent of students are women, 45 percent at Tuck School of Business, and 45 percent at Imperial College Business School in London. At least more than half of the business schools (namely 29) have a share of women of 35 percent or more. That is more than twice as many women as in 2014, when there were only 14 schools.

Elissa Sangster, CEO of the FortÚ Foundation, says that the goal is to reach 40 percent women in partner schools by 2020, which should also increase the pool of female managers. Finally, a wide variety of research results show that a larger number of women in top positions optimize a company's financial performance.

Promotional measures for women in the MBA course

The FortÚ Foundation, which was founded in 2001, uses a variety of conferences and programs to ensure that an increasing proportion of women begin and finish management training. FortÚ Foundation currently has 53 business schools, 38 of which are in the United States, 4 in Canada and 11 in Europe. European partners include the ESADE Business School, HEC Paris, INSEAD, the London Business School and the Oxford Sa´d Business School - but so far not a single German school. The IMD was recently accepted as the 53rd member in Lausanne, but has not yet participated in the current survey.

The FortÚ Fellows Program is one of the diverse initiatives of the FortÚ Foundation. MBA students can apply for grants provided by the members. To date, international schools have distributed over $ 142 million to over 6,300 FortÚ Fellows.
