MBA INTERVIEW WITH PIA MAIER, BERLIN-CHEMIE: "I NEVER DOUBTED"
Pia Maier, project manager of the Strategic Health
Management department at Berlin-Chemie, decided to
pursue a part-time MBA in Health Care Management after
completing her master's degree in political science. She
completed her studies at the HWR - Berlin School of
Economics and Law.
Firefighter, locomotive driver or doctor,
these are the dream jobs of many children: What did you
want to be when you were young?
I wanted to be a journalist and I wanted to
write long historical articles in a weekly magazine.
Which decision did you make the most for your career?
After many career steps in my lap, I decided to
go into the health sector a good and right way
myself. Now I work in a diverse area that is developing
rapidly and with which everyone has something to do.
Why did you choose an MBA?
The MBA offered me two things at once: the
business qualification and the specialization in the
field of health care management. After studying
political science, it became clear that it is simply not
possible without management in the field of management
tasks. And the tools you bring in are not enough. The
MBA Health Care Management combined this with the
specific information from the health sector, so that it
was an excellent basis for my job search.
Have there been moments when you have had doubts about
this decision?
I never doubted, swore quite often. Two years
part-time, in addition to a job that requires overtime,
is no easy job. Almost no vacation for two years, still
studying together in study groups in the evening,
sitting at my desk at the weekend at home, and when I
wrote my master's thesis in a really hot summer, the
computer burned through - hours after the last save. In
short: It was exhausting, but not to despair, because
there were also the study colleagues who gave support.
How do you deal with setbacks?
Take time to lick the wounds, analyze what
happened, and then think about where and how to proceed.
The MBA is one of the most expensive training
courses. Did this investment pay off?
For me, the MBA was a perfect fit and was
absolutely worth the money. The contacts and the
knowledge gained are actually priceless and the formal
qualification has paid off.
What have you learned from your MBA for life
and not for your job?
That you can and always go to school - and
should! Even with the best of intentions, reading
specialist books alone will never help as much as
learning together.
Which role models are you based on?
To people who impress me - with their
knowledge, their special skills, their commitment.
When do you advise academics to get an MBA?
If you really want to learn new things, for
example to orient yourself in a new area, for which you
need specialist knowledge and want to make contacts.
