History of Adel, Iowa
Adel, Iowa is a city located in Dallas County that was founded in 1846. The town was named after Adelbert Ames, who fought in the Civil War and later became a United States Senator from Mississippi. The first settlers to the area were from Ohio and Pennsylvania, and they were attracted to the area by its fertile soil and abundant water sources.
The first businesses established in Adel were a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a hotel. As the town grew, more businesses began to open up such as sawmills, grist mills, banks, churches, schools and newspapers. In 1867 Adel was officially incorporated as a city with its own mayor and council members.
In 1873 the first railroad line came through Adel giving it access to larger markets which further aided its growth. This also helped establish an agricultural economy with corn being one of the most important crops grown in the area at that time. As more people moved into Adel during this period of growth it became known as “The Garden Spot of Iowa” due to its abundance of various fruits and vegetables that could be grown there.
By 1900 Adel had become an important transportation hub with three railroads passing through it as well as two major highways connecting it to other cities in Iowa. At this time there were over 1,000 people living in Adel which made for a bustling downtown area with stores selling goods from all over the world.
The 20th century brought even more growth for Adel with new businesses such as factories for manufacturing farm equipment as well as automotive parts opening up throughout town. This provided jobs for many people who had moved into town during this period of industrialization leading to even more population growth which peaked at around 2,500 people by 1960.
In recent years Adel has experienced slower population growth but still remains an important part of Dallas County with plenty of opportunities available for residents including small business ownership or working at one of many local companies such as Hy-Vee or John Deere dealerships located nearby. The city still maintains its agricultural roots while also embracing modern technology such as fiber optic internet access throughout town making it an ideal place to live or visit today.
