MBA: NOT WITHOUT ACCREDITATION
When choosing an MBA, the accreditation of the business school or MBA program is also important, among other factors. We show you the most important accreditations and how they are awarded.
MBA is not the same as MBA
What is a good MBA? In addition to duration and program content, accreditation also plays a central role. The seal of approval is awarded after a thorough review of the university or degree programs, if all requirements are met. “The check serves for regular quality assurance in the degree programs”, explains Olaf Bartz from the Accreditation Council. Accreditation improves the international comparability of degree programs and ensures greater transparency. The quality seal is awarded either for the entire business school or for individual MBA programs.
In addition to program or system accreditation, accreditation as a university is required at private universities. It is carried out by the Science Council, among others. This ensures that teaching and research are based on recognized scientific standards. In addition, the material and staffing of the university is checked. The accreditation of the chosen MBA can be important not only during your studies, but also when looking for a job. Many employers also look towards the quality seal when selecting applicants.
From ACQUIN to ZEvA
As a rule, accreditations are made by agencies that have previously been assessed by the Accreditation Council. The most important accreditation body in America is the AACSB. Recognized accreditations in Europe are the EPAS and EQUISseals of approval from the EFMD, in Great Britain the accreditation from the AMBA, in Germany the FIBAA, ACQUIN and ZEvA and the seal of approval from the French CGE and the Italian ASFOR. The Austrian agency AQA and the Swiss agency QAQ can also carry out accreditations. Accreditations for MBA courses and business schools by AACSB, AQAS and EFMD are internationally renowned.
Universities with a triple accreditation from AMBA, AACSB and EQUIS have the so-called Triple Crown. So far, one university in Germany has received this special award: the Mannheim Business School.
The long way to the seal of approval
Up to an MBA-Programme or a complete university is accredited, it can take six to nine months. Accreditation by the AACSB can sometimes take a few years. The school itself takes the first step on the path to accreditation. It submits an application for accreditation and sends the accreditation agency a detailed report on the MBA course to be accredited. A team of experts consisting of external professors, students and representatives from professional practice will then visit the university and hold talks with lecturers and students. The agency then also produces a report on the basis of which a recommendation for or against the accreditation is made. The decision then lies with an accreditation commission selected by the agency.
If the decision is positive, the accreditation is initially granted for five years. With a re-accreditation, the quality seal is awarded for a further seven years. Accreditation with conditions is also possible. If a university does not meet the requirements within one year, the accreditation is withdrawn. Accreditation is rejected in less than one percent of the procedures.
Minimum standard of quality
Even if the choice for an accredited MBA program has been made, there are sometimes doubts: to what extent can I trust the special accreditation? Basically, if an MBA program is accredited, a minimum standard of quality is guaranteed. However, caution is advised. You should be particularly careful if you want to do your MBA at an AACSB-accredited university outside the United States. Some universities adorn themselves with the AACSB seal of approval, but are only members of the agency. This does not automatically lead to accreditation.
Those interested in MBA should also take a close look at other accreditations. In part, MBA programs in Germany have the seal of a German accreditation agency, but could still have quality defects. That means: the course may not be fully developed, the faculty will be changed or lecturers will be exchanged. International accreditation is therefore becoming increasingly important. If you want to play it safe with programs in Germany, you can make sure that the MBA also bears an international seal of quality in addition to a German accreditation.
In the USA, in addition to AACSB accreditation, the program should also bear the seal of a regional accreditation agency that is responsible for the respective area. Britain’s MBA programs are considered reputable and recognized if they have the AMBA or EFMD seal. It should also be checked how long ago the accreditation was and whether it is still valid.
Only if everything is right with the accreditation should you start with the MBA. If there are problems with the quality seal, it means: stay away. After all, nobody would want to drive a car without a TÜV badge.
