MBA INTERVIEW: CLEAR GOALS ARE CONVINCING
Anyone applying for an MBA degree must expect high demands and tough competition. MBA recruiting expert Will Toussaint reveals which building blocks a good application needs and how you can convince the business schools.
Early start or last minute – when should I start preparing for the application?
Many applicants are already looking for the right MBA one year before the start of their studies. And that’s just as well. Anyone interested in a good, accredited MBA program should definitely keep in mind that intensive application preparation is mandatory. Last but not least, hurdles such as the GMAT and TOEFL tests or the preparation for essays and interviews are waiting. And if you need a visa, you should allow a few weeks to wait. Those interested in MBA who do not plan ahead should also try to take advantage of this opportunity. Because the business schools can also accept short-term applicants within a few days. Provided that all application documents are complete. Even if an application should work on the last minute – it is important that the participant is present in time for the start of the program. Those who take this into account often lay the foundations for a successful degree.
What is part of a good application?
In addition to basic formalities such as certificates, a good GMAT score and proof of English language skills (TOEFL), we pay particular attention to the recommendations of the applicants in the admissions process. Because they say a lot about them.
And what makes such a good reference?
We require two references from our participants. Normally at least one of them should be created by the line manager. The reference providers should above all describe the potential of the applicant. How does he deal with management tasks? Does he have a positive attitude to work? And of course: is he stress-resistant, able to work in a team and motivated?
What to do if the supervisor does not take part?
Sometimes it happens that the line manager – for whatever reason – is not ready to write a recommendation. Then I would recommend contacting a similarly qualified person who can objectively assess the applicant’s characteristics.
How important are the essays?
The essays also reveal a lot about the motivation of the MBA aspirant, his suitability and maturity as well as his performance. And of course the professional experience of each individual is very important to us. After all, the quality of the course for all participants depends not least on the individual background that everyone brings to the class.
What distinguishes a good essay from a bad one?
Similar to the interview, the presentation of your own motivation should go as far as possible beyond money and career wishes. It is good if the applicant shows that they are interested in broadening their horizons, learning the tools of good leadership and engaging in the intercultural MBA adventure. Clear objectives that are associated with the MBA are convincing – for example, wanting to learn more about finance, marketing and ways to increase the innovative strength of a team. If the desire for an MBA arises from the knowledge and experience of the previous job and is combined with the desire to further expand your own potential, it always works very convincingly. The last component of a good application is the interview by the business school.
And how can you prepare for it?
Before the interview, every applicant should think carefully about their motives for an MBA degree so that they can convey them authentically in the conversation. A good basis for the conversation is certainly the essay. Because here the applicants had the opportunity to think about these topics in advance and can build on them in conversation. In any case, you should have a clear idea of your own goals and be able to show commitment and willingness to perform. Because the desire for better salary and career opportunities is not enough as an argument and will not inspire an interviewer anytime soon.
