INTERVIEW ON THE MBA DISTANCE LEARNING: “THERE ARE NO CLASSIC FRONTAL LESSONS”
An MBA in distance learning? Far too theoretical, without practical relevance and you are quite isolated, many say. Not true, says Tristan Sage, student advisor at the Open University Business School, in an interview.
Who is a distance learning MBA suitable for?
Distance learning is particularly suitable for those who acquire internationally recognized management knowledge without a professional break and would like to apply the knowledge directly in their work area.
Distance learning is a good alternative for everyone who is very busy at work.
Study, but also attendance phases can be arranged individually thanks to the self-learning phases. Those who travel a lot on business may find time to learn on the train or plane. Breaks are also possible. If the students are once out of work or through family commitments, modules can be chosen flexibly.
And who should go for the classic study variant?
The classic course of study is suitable for those interested in MBA who are flexible in terms of time or space and who value frontal teaching. Those who are critical of the new media will find it difficult to make friends with distance learning. Because the blended learning applied there includes the learning technologies of Web 2.0. The work is done in a mix of e-learning and different media – such as DVDs, podcasts, online tutorials, online libraries and classic study textbooks.
How much time does a distance MBA study take each day?
Anyone who can imagine spending an average of at least ten to 15 hours a week studying is in good hands here. Some MBA students postpone their learning to the weekend, others study after hours. Some find time during a business trip to work out individual sections on their laptop or with their study book. The learning plan can be designed individually and flexibly, but project or homework must be submitted on certain dates.
Do you have to be a certain type of learning to master distance learning?
In addition to a good deal of self-discipline and motivation, distance learning students must above all bring good time management if they want to combine their studies, work, family and private life.
Performance controls should not deter them.
In contrast to a conventional university seminar, distance students only receive personal feedback on their learning progress after they have submitted their project work to the tutor. Therefore, regular homework or project work that is assessed by the tutor is extremely important.
Regular project work, e-learning and online libraries – that sounds like a pretty gray theory …
No way! The Fernuniversität takes new pedagogical paths in its MBA studies – also with the help of Web 2.0. Classical frontal teaching is of course not found here. The professors do not teach in the traditional sense – rather they doactically implement the research results from their faculty in books or media in such a way that they captivate the MBA participants and encourage them to transfer the content to their professional environment.
For this purpose, they bring current case studies with them and regularly ask the students to bring in problems from their profession so that everyone can learn from and with each other.
So-called “mini-tutorials” with a podcast are new. These virtual meetings are most comparable to teaching on the blackboard. Last but not least, it is these media productions that fill the course content with life and explain complicated content.
But as an MBA student in front of a PC, you’re still pretty isolated, right?
I wouldn’t say that. The distance learning to lecturers and fellow students is often closer than in the classic course, in which some lectures are attended by hundreds of people.
And what does that look like?
In distance learning, the exchange among each other is expressly encouraged. Tutors, supervisors and academics provide specialist help and support during their studies – either in person, by phone or by email, in the attendance phases or in the electronic conference system. Giving feedback and motivating students to exchange ideas are their most important tasks.
At the regular tutorials and residential schools, a group of students meet with their tutor, who usually supervises 15 to 20 students, and develop the knowledge together. This creates friendships, business and private partnerships, but above all networks.
In Germany, too, the alumni association and students invite several times a year to specialist lectures, discussion groups and other meetings. In the MBA alumni network, participants can also exchange ideas with numerous alumni from many countries around the world at any time.
