You are right here! On this page you will find everything you need to know about an MBA in Health Management: basic information about content, costs, types of study (full-time, part-time, distance learning) as well as interesting information about career opportunities. We also asked MBA graduates about their experiences.
The demands on managers in health and social care are increasing. Not only are the structural and cultural conditions for the provision of services becoming more and more complex, but above all financially the industry is under pressure.
The auditing firm KPMG writes in a recent study that our hospitals are increasingly becoming hospital companies. If you want to survive in the tough competition for patients, staff and financial resources, you also have to work in a highly efficient and qualitative exemplary manner.
The MBA in Health Management prepares students for precisely these challenges. Below you will find everything you need to know about this course.
What you should know about your studies
Health managers combine health science and business skills . The extent to which medical competencies also belong depends on the initial training. There are two general orientations in the MBA: There are industry-specific and institution -specific study programs.
The sector-specific health management MBAs deal with the business aspects of the health system in general (from health insurance companies to health policy and hospital management), the facility-specific MBAs are primarily intended for senior physicians, for example, they deal with the “hospital” work environment in particular.
In principle, an MBA health management (or new German “Health Care Management”) is suitable for both doctors and graduates of courses such as business administration, pharmacy or nursing. In recent years, however, special facility-specific MBA courses have been launched for doctors . In addition to the health management MBA courses described here, these are a further option worth considering.
The MBA Health Management is the right choice for anyone who has not completed a medical degree but is approaching a career in healthcare from the business side.
Forms of study & course of study
There are actually no full-time MBAs, particularly in the area of health management . With regard to the professional activity of the students, most courses are designed as part-time face-to-face studies or as distance learning with presence phases.
We have created a brief overview of the definition:
Health management MBA as … | Procedure | Requirement |
Full-time study | They attend lectures every day at the corresponding university or university. | This MBA course is difficult to combine with a job – students should be willing to give up a job for about 3 semesters. |
Part-time classroom study | The lectures take place either in the evening in the week (e.g. from 6:00 p.m.) or in block seminars at the weekend. | You have to be motivated to go to school after a working day. In addition, the university must not be too far from where they work or live. |
Distance learning | They teach the majority of the teaching content themselves at home using study books. In some cases there are supplementary face-to-face courses. | It is important to be able to motivate yourself to learn. The workload is approximately 10-15 hours per week over approximately two years. |
The majority of universities offer the MBA as a part-time course. But you should find out exactly when the lectures take place. At the Graduate School Rhine-Neckar, for example, once a month on weekends and taught once a month in a block week. This is also part-time because you can work in the other weeks, but you need several weeks of vacation a year.
At HS Würzburg-Schweinfurt, lectures take place on two weekends (= Friday + Saturday) per month. The MBA Health Care Management at the University of Bayreuth runs similarly , namely on a total of 18 weekends from Friday at 10 a.m. to Sunday at 5 p.m. The University of Erlangen-Nuremberg offers one of the few distance learning courses. Here you learn almost all of the contents of the course in self-study, only at the end of the semester does a three-day attendance phase take place (Friday, 4 p.m. to Sunday, 1 p.m.).
Study duration
Typically, the MBA in Health Management lasts 3 – 4 semesters, i.e. 1.5 – 2 years. Only a few contents are taught in the last semester, the focus here is on writing the final thesis.
Requirements
As mentioned at the beginning, the MBA Health Management is aimed at graduates of numerous courses, from medicine and pharmacy to biology, psychology, sports science, pedagogy or health and nursing sciences to economics and law.
The requirements for admission to study are less about the area in which your first degree was located, but rather that you have at least one or even several years of professional experience. Some providers, such as the University of Potsdam, also require proof of good English skills, for example in the form of the TOEFL test.
