MBA INTERVIEW WITH VOLKER RESSEL, IBM: “IDEAL ADDITION TO TECHNICAL STUDIES.”
Volker Ressel, 43, department head and senior project manager in the field of emerging technologies and architecture at IBM, decided after completing his degree in communications engineering and several years of professional experience at IBM for a part-time MBA course at Warwick University.
Firemen, locomotive drivers or doctors are the dream jobs of many children: What did you want to be when you were young?
As a child I always wanted to be a teacher. I could still imagine this profession very well today. In any case, it would make sense for our society to link schools and business more closely.
Which decision did you make the most for your career?
My development as a project manager and later as a business area manager gave me the opportunity to take on responsibility and shape the business environment.
Why did you choose an MBA?
The MBA was the ideal addition to my technical studies. After many years in the job, it is helpful to also consider the theoretical side of business management.
The IT sector has become increasingly popular with MBA graduates in recent years. Where do you see the reasons for this?
The IT environment plays a much more important role than ten or 20 years ago. In the meantime there is hardly any area that can do without IT. Therefore, the market with many large and global players for MBA graduates is very attractive. In addition, the IT sector is more international than almost any other branch. The globally trained MBA graduates in particular are certainly very attracted to this. In addition: IT is no longer an end in itself. The industry is always looking for employees who can look beyond the purely technical side and also understand the economic component.
Have there been moments when you have had doubts about this decision?
No, not even if the burden was quite high due to the study parallel to the job.
How do you deal with setbacks?
I always set professional setbacks in relation to the really important things in the private environment.
The MBA is one of the most expensive training courses. Did this investment pay off?
Regardless of salary and career jumps, the MBA definitely makes you safer. You understand the big picture of a company better, the strategies behind certain decisions and can therefore also better deal with and react to them. You can see what is state-of-the-art today and you can better see in your own work what is going well and where there is room for improvement.
What have you learned from your MBA for life and not for your job?
The study in Warwick was very international: my fellow students came from 20 different countries. That also changes the personal perspective incredibly.
Which role models are you based on?
To people who have a conviction and also represent it against resistance; live your own convictions but never implement them without compromise.
When do you advise academics to get an MBA?
In general, you should always look for ways to develop. Learning has to be a constant companion. In my view, the MBA makes sense for all those who want to look behind the scenes of business management and then take on responsibility themselves.
