MBA in Controlling
Here you can find all information about the MBA in Controlling. This can go up to the boardroom, as we show with examples. And we not only have an overview of all universities and MBA courses (whether full-time, part-time or as a distance learning course), but also basic information about the content, costs and more. There are also experience reports from graduates!
If decisions have to be made based on facts and decisions already made have to be checked for their success, controllers are used. But controlling is much more than “counting peas”. In addition to marketing, controlling has become one of the most important functional areas in almost every company today.
Do you want to further qualify for this? Then an MBA in controlling can be the right step for you.
As mentioned, controlling has become indispensable in business practice: not in public companies and certainly not in medium-sized and large companies. Especially here, graduates of an MBA have good career opportunities.
These career opportunities don’t end in middle management. Numerous CFOs or CEOs of large companies are controllers – with an appropriate MBA, you can stand out from the competition for top jobs.
What does a controller’s field of work look like in everyday work? This profession has less to do with control than with the targeted preparation of different company data. Controllers gather information that executives need to make decisions, plan and monitor the fulfillment of plans, and coordinate individual management levels with each other so that corporate goals can be achieved efficiently.
In short, controllers support executives and make a decisive contribution to the success of the goal-oriented control of operational processes in the company.
Forms of study
A Controlling MBA degree is available with a wide variety of study types and concepts. A brief overview:
|Controlling MBA as…||Procedure||Requirement|
|Full-time study||They attend lectures every day at the corresponding university or university.||This MBA course is difficult to combine with a job – students should therefore be prepared to do without a full-time job for about 3-4 semesters.|
|Part-time classroom study||The lectures take place either in the evening in the week (e.g. from 6:00 p.m.) or in block seminars at the weekend.||You have to have the motivation to go to school after a working day. In addition, the university should not be too far from where they work or live.|
|Distance learning||They teach the majority of the teaching content themselves at home using study books. In some cases there are supplementary face-to-face courses.||It is important to be able to motivate yourself to learn. The workload is approximately 10-15 hours per week over approximately 2 years.|
The University of Münster describes its MBA Accounting & Controlling as part-time, but there are several weeks in the first semesters in which the MBA students study on site before self-study phases are added later. The University of Regensburg also has a concept that requires vacation days: The lectures of MBA Controlling take place in monthly intensive blocks (all day Thursday to Saturday).
The MBA can also be completed as a distance learning course, for example at the Danube University Krems in Austria. Here, blended learning is used, i.e. the combination of distance learning elements (e-learning, video lectures, digital documents) and a few presence phases.
Accordingly, it is important that you inform yourself exactly about the course of the (part-time or full-time) controlling studies at the universities of interest to you, after all, a job should usually still be possible.
Course of study & duration
In most MBA courses, you will learn general knowledge from all disciplines of business administration in the first semesters. In the further course of the course, more and more specialized controlling content is on the curriculum.
The duration is between two and three years, i.e. four and six semesters.
Anyone who chooses the Danube University Krems can also be admitted without a first degree (= Bachelor or Diploma). The prerequisite is a university entrance qualification, appropriate professional experience and an entrance test.
German universities are more restrictive when it comes to MBA controlling. Nothing works without a bachelor’s or diploma. In addition, professional practice and knowledge of accounting and controlling are required – depending on the provider, between one and three years.
An MBA is not cheap – as you can see from the examples below, the costs for MBA controlling are always in the five-digit range, between around 12,000 and 17,000 euros.
- Uni Regensburg: 14,000 euros in full-time study
- University of Münster: 11,950 euros
- FHDW: 16,500 euros
- Danube University Krems: 16,900 euros
If you are thinking about financing, you should not forget that there may be additional costs for hotel stays on and for the journeys to the place of study as well as course materials.
