The OM-D E-M5 Olympus has brought one of the best-equipped and most technically demanding micro-four-thirds system cameras on the market. As the mix of current high-tech and traditional design when the photographer arrives, reveals the ColorFoto reader test.
The mirrorless micro-four-thirds system camera Olympus OM-D E-M5, which cut 27 percent better than average with 54 points in the ColorFoto test weighs only 425 grams. Not only the case in a Retro-style is a special feature, but also its robust, splash-proof construction.
Built-in electronic viewfinder with 480,000 RGB pixel resolution and the folding OLED monitor with 203.300 RGB pixels the Olympus OM-D E M5 stand out from the crowd. All I like also the users and may have contributed to the purchase decision for the E-M5 sure.
Operation, facilities, picture quality
One of the advantages of micro four thirds is the compact design of cameras and lenses. a2zcamerablog.com, the very good reader note from 8.93 shows that the Olympus OM-D E M5 meets these expectations very well. Also the grip touch of 7.45 for a relatively compact camera bears witness of satisfied users. The assignment of functions to the operating elements and their arrangement on the camera is felt with notes by about 8 as managed, for the ergonomics with 7.47 and for the fast and safe function with 7,81 ordinary notes.
The note of 6,93-the battery of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 is no specular highlight. This is probably due to the small Bay and the electronic viewfinder. That the users will find some characteristics of the Olympus menu structure isn’t perfect, shows the note from 6.64 on this point as also the 6.86 for the clarity.
The quick availability is less critical with 7.29, perceived readability even with 8,16 as well. Also contribute largely to as well to very well evaluated size of the 100 percent viewfinder with 480000 RGB pixels (8.48) and the 3-inch touchscreen OLED monitor (8.53). The visibility of the viewfinder information will be calculated very well 8,59, while slight criticism is in touch 7,07 for the usability of the monitor sunlight despite OLED.
Praise for accuracy and speed
The 5-axis image stabilization as well as accuracy and speed of the Sensor-contrast AF the Olympus OM-D E-M5 take very good notes between 8.6 to 8.83 normally, that is even slightly better than recently the Sony A55. While the AF performance at night with 7.59 is still well rated, 6.79 sharper criticism of the focus tracking comes with touch.
Evaluating the performance of the micro four thirds sensor with 16.1-megapixel reflects the result of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 ColorFoto laboratory test. The notes are at ISO 200 and 400 in all criteria between 8 and 9. The values between 7 and 8 for ISO 800 point to E-M5 satisfied users. Only at ISO 1,600, the E-M5 notes under 7 for texture, dynamics and noise are certified limits. Especially last assessment is pretty much unanimous with standard deviations to the 1.7.
While the reliability of the exposure metering even in low light conditions as well as the various white balance criteria with values over 8 are consistently well graded, the balance of the Flash exposure control with 7.75 is judged somewhat more critical. With notes of 7,76 for the guarantee and the system offers is the Olympus E-M5 in the inconspicuous area, with note 5.5 for instructions, critique, however, falls considerably.
Praise & blame
From many individual comments, but accurate information is given practical advantages and criticisms on the Olympus OM-D E-M5. Some are very individual, others show already trends.
Autofocus and image stabilization, 5 axes specify clearly the hit list of the best features of the E-M5. Since many users agree. “Unmatched image stabilizer! “Contrast AF outstanding and extremely accurately, goal when LiveView”, Peter Moche is thrilled. Uwe Dörr I like especially the AF control via touchscreen and their accuracy. “Fast in every way” forward also Karl stubble over the Olympus OM-D E-M5.
Convincing electronic viewfinder
A lance for the electronic viewfinder fails Stefan Heynen and just a Tip: “electronic viewfinder, which can be reduced somewhat for the continuous shooting in quality, but then shows convincing a sufficiently high refresh rate and thus to me clearly with good optical finders can keep up.”
Also about the actually rarely required Live-bulb function forward many E-M5 photographers such as Iam Siggi, Roger Wimbert, Michael Antweiler, Rainer Kiefer, Paul D. Scharpf, W. Uhlig, Walter Strugatzki, Darko Ahey, Oliver Geibel and more.
Rarely as preferred of the OM-D Spitz water protection, called surprising, by the way about Michel wool Abdullah and Jonas Döring. On the other hand Walter Strugatzki wants more of that “there are only two splash-proof lenses! A macro and the faint kit lens. So the advantage of the sealed enclosure is offset!”
Overall pleased with the “high configuration and personalization ability” of E-M5 Jonas Döring. And Helmut Honigmann praises “the completely individual adjustment of keys and wheels.”
Type filter with digital effects
Hans-Gerd Schulte Übbing is one of the few people who praised emphasizes the folding monitor as often as required according to the if cameras don’t have it. The type filter with digital effects out of the box are apparently the least Olympus M5 photographers important. Oliver Geibel mentioned as the single and only “type filter diorama” for the miniature effect.
System cameras buying advice: How to find the right Mirrorless
Also the restraint, which have many OM D E M5 photographers of the HD video feature is striking. “I don’t need it. I never used after the first function test”, says Paul Scharpf,”yet little used, great quality”, Alexander link is slightly back and caught in the middle. “I do not use” and “I can’t help to say,” it says in approximately one third of the comments on video.
Critical point control
There is criticism mainly on operating details of the Olympus OM-D E-M5. “Function buttons on the back too fiddly”, says Reinhard Zimmermann, “access to”My Set”very nested menu, says Stefan Heinen,” no quick access to all “my sets” Jonas Döring. “” Occasional menu searches”and Fn2 button fiddly”, complains Helmut Honigmann. Uwe Dörr is slightly annoyed: “the configuration of the arrow keys illogical. Only two are programmable. The remaining two buttons with illogical function, which partly overlap with other keys, particularly the manual AF points and exposure are easily adjustable.”
Overview: All Olympus system cameras in the test
The auto focus also taking criticism in detail. Hesse the “accidental arrow keys move” noticed the shift of the AF field in the magnifying function, Albert W. Kropf, and Hans-Gerd Schulte Übbing “the quick adjustment of the auto focus point”. Not fast enough is, however, of continuous focus tracking (C-AF) or subject tracking a variety of users, such as Reinhard Zimmermann, Jörg Kannwischer, Peter Moche, Walter Strugatzki, OLAF Kadam wiper, W. bolster and Christof pastor.
Missing a Focus peaking indication, is goiter, Stefan Heynen and Roger Wimbert as an aid for manual focus such as Reinhard Zimmermann, Jörg Kannwischer, Manfred Gehann, Peter Hallows, Wolfgang. Stefen Heinen wishes as some other better panorama function: “The panorama is not automatically in-camera made as the sweep panorama at Sony.”
OM-D E M5 photographers who also want to use the video function, however, would like the current state of the art with 50 p or 60 p. Usually called function on the wish list hit is last not least a Real HDR function with variable exposure bracketing, such as by IAM Siggy, Holger Sköries, Manfred Gehann, Michael Antweiler, Alexander link, Hans-Georg Matthäs, Oliver Geibel, Jörg Kannwischer and S. time.
