MBA Requirement: Letter of Motivation
You want to start an MBA at a university – but what are the specific reasons for this? And why are you, of all people, the right applicant for the course in question? This should be stated in your letter of motivation.
In order to find out why you chose the MBA and why you are a suitable candidate for the study place offered, many universities or business schools require a letter of motivation. Accordingly, this not only gives the reasons for your decision, but should also give a first personal impression and point out your skills and qualifications.
How should a letter of motivation be structured?
As with any formal cover letter, you should of course find your own contact details and the address of the addressee you are addressing at the top left of the first page. The date and subject line must not be missing. Only then does the actual letter of motivation follow, which can be roughly divided into three parts: introduction, main part and conclusion.
Introduction
The introduction is primarily about the applicant briefly introducing himself and his background. The actual reason for writing should also be listed here . The introduction should be kept extremely short and should not be longer than two to three sentences.
Bulk
The introduction is followed by the main part, in which you should primarily explain why you chose this course of study and this university. Here you can also state what you hope to gain from participating in an MBA program and what impact the degree is likely to have on achieving your professional goals.
However, you should not only deal with what the university has to offer, but also highlight what you can bring and offer yourself . In this part of the letter of motivation you have the chance to present yourself as positively as possible and to differentiate yourself from your competitors by emphasizing (in a sympathetic manner) your own strengths and abilities.
For a credible presentation, you should always back it up with examples. For example, a good first degree, international experience and practical professional experience are suitable for this. Since the main part is the heart of the letter of motivation, it should also be the most extensive part. It often makes sense to divide it into two different sections.
Enough
At the end of the letter of motivation which is final . What it is made up of depends primarily on the length of the previous letter. If this is rather short (i.e. clearly below a DIN A4 page), the conclusion can be designed as a kind of conclusion or summary plea. In this case, however, make absolutely sure to avoid repetitions .
However, if the letter of motivation already has a certain length, the conclusion should only consist of a farewell formula.
The most important points
Presenting your own person and motivation on a length of only one to a maximum of two pages can be a real challenge; after all, there is usually much more to say here. For precisely this reason, the letter of motivation also serves as a first “test”; it serves as proof that the applicant is able to express himself clearly and understandably and to separate important information from irrelevant.
It is therefore of the utmost importance to make sure in the letter of motivation that as little information as possible is conveyed as much information as possible. This works best if you observe the following tips and tips:
- The motivation letter is primarily about differentiating yourself from your competitors. For this reason, you should absolutely avoid using standardized and accordingly empty formulations and phrases. The closer you are to yourself and your individual motivation and history, the more convincing and better.
- Establish a direct link to the university or business school and the course of your choice. Do research on the relevant homepage and go into concrete facts and offers that prompted you to apply fairly to this institute. For example, you can refer to specific course content, projects or international programs that are of particular interest to you. This shows the provider that you dealt with the course in advance and made an informed decision.
- Research in advance whether the institute of your choice specifies fixed specifications for the preparation and structure of a letter of motivation. If this is the case, you should never ignore them.
