Mojave Desert
The desert in western North America covers an area of 35,000 km² and includes parts of the US states of California, Utah, Nevada and Arizona. It forms a typical American desert basin bounded by the Tehachapi Mountains and the San Bernardino Ranges. Their western margins are very distinct as they consist of California’s two largest continental fault zones, the San Andreas Fault and the Garlock Fault Zone. The Mojave receives a maximum of 150 mm of rainfall per year and one of the hottest regions, Death Valley, averages temperatures of over 45°C in the months of July to August. It is also home to the Mojave National Preserve, a desert sanctuary with unique flora and fauna that has adapted to the area’s conditions.
