According to top-medical-schools, Franklin County, Idaho was established in 1913 from parts of Oneida and Bannock Counties. The county was named in honor of Franklin D. Richards, an apostle for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The county has a population of around 12,000 people and is located in the southeastern part of the state. It is bordered by Caribou County to the north and Bingham County to the south. The first settlers to Franklin County were Mormon pioneers who arrived in 1864, followed by a few non-Mormon settlers in 1877. The first town incorporated was Preston, which became the county seat when it was organized in 1913. Other towns soon followed such as Franklin, Weston, Clifton, and Hill City. Farming has always been an important part of life for those living in Franklin County with potatoes being one of their most important crops. Other crops grown include wheat, oats, alfalfa hay, and barley. In addition to farming there is also a strong livestock industry in the area with cattle being raised on many farms throughout the county. Today, it continues to be a major agricultural center with many small family farms as well as large corporate operations that produce potatoes and other produce for commercial sale throughout Idaho and beyond. The Franklin County School District covers much of the county, with the exception of a small portion in the northwest corner that is part of the Oneida School District. The district is made up of six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Most students attend Preston High School located in Preston, Idaho. The school offers a variety of academic programs including Advanced Placement classes and several career and technical courses. In addition to academics, Preston High also offers extracurricular activities such as sports teams, music programs, drama productions, and student clubs. The district also operates six elementary schools located in Clifton, Franklin, Hill City, Mink Creek, Preston and Weston. These schools offer a variety of core classes as well as art and music classes to students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Two middle schools are located in Franklin and Weston which serve students in grades sixth through eighth grade. These schools provide an education that prepares students for high school as well as exploring their interests through elective courses such as band or robotics.
