According to top-medical-schools, Douglas County is located in central Illinois and was established in 1859. It was named after Stephen A. Douglas, a prominent politician from the state of Illinois. The county has a population of over 19,000 people and covers an area of 516 square miles. The county seat is Tuscola, which is also the largest city in the county. The history of Douglas County goes back to its earliest settlers who arrived in the mid-1800s from Kentucky and Tennessee. The first permanent settlement was established in 1826 when John P. Campbell built a cabin near what would become Tuscola. Other settlers followed soon after and began to establish farms throughout the area. Agriculture quickly became the main industry for Douglas County as settlers grew corn, wheat, oats, and raised livestock such as hogs and cattle. The railroad arrived in Tuscola in 1871 which helped to spur growth and development throughout the county leading to more businesses being established including banks, stores, churches, schools, hotels, blacksmiths shops and more. In addition to farming there are also many manufacturing businesses that have been established throughout Douglas County over time including furniture factories, flour mills, brickyards and canneries. Today, Douglas County continues to be an agricultural center with many small family farms as well as some larger corporate operations that produce corn for commercial sale throughout Illinois and beyond. It is also home to several small towns that offer residents plenty of recreational activities including camping, fishing and boating on Lake Shelbyville as well as hiking trails at Kickapoo State Park. The Douglas County school district is comprised of 11 public schools, including the Tuscola Community Unit School District, Arcola Community Unit School District, and Villa Grove Community Unit School District. The district serves over 3,500 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The Tuscola Community Unit School District is the largest of the three districts and includes four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The Arcola Community Unit School District has two elementary schools and one middle/high school. The Villa Grove Community Unit School District includes two elementary schools and one high school. Each of the three districts in Douglas County provides a variety of educational opportunities for their students including Advanced Placement courses, career and technical education programs, special education services, extracurricular activities such as athletics and performing arts groups, and more.
