According to top-medical-schools, Hampden County is located in the western part of Massachusetts and is the most populous county in the state. The county was created in 1812 and named after the English statesman John Hampden. It covers an area of 838 square miles and has a population of 477,947 as of 2019. The earliest inhabitants of Hampden County were Native Americans, including the Pocomtuc tribe, who lived along the Connecticut River Valley. In 1636, Springfield was founded by William Pynchon as a fur trading post and became the first permanent settlement in Hampden County. In 1774, Hampden County was established by Massachusetts General Court out of parts of Hampshire, Franklin and Berkshire Counties. During the American Revolution, George Washington stayed in Springfield on his way to Boston to take command of the Continental Army. He also visited several other towns in Hampden County during this time. After the Revolution ended in 1783, growth began to boom in Hampden County with new settlements being established throughout the area. The population grew rapidly thanks to immigration from Europe and industrialization that began during this period. In 1848, Holyoke became one of America’s first planned industrial cities with its canal system that provided power for factories and mills along its banks. This led to an increase in manufacturing jobs which attracted more immigrants from all over Europe who came looking for work. By 1900, Holyoke had become one of America’s leading industrial centers with many large companies like American Bosch Arma Corporation setting up shop there. Today, Hampden County is home to a diverse population with many different cultures represented throughout its towns and cities such as Springfield, Holyoke, Westfield and Chicopee among others. It is also home to several higher education institutions like Western New England University and Bay Path University as well as numerous historical sites that tell its rich history dating back hundreds of years ago when it was first settled by Native Americans followed by European immigrants looking for a better life for themselves and their families.
