The county was established in 1808, and it was named after the Delaware Indians who inhabited the region prior to European settlement. The population of Delaware County as of 2019 was 181,435 people according to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. The first settlers in Delaware County arrived in 1801 and were primarily farmers from Pennsylvania and New York. In addition to agriculture, manufacturing has also been important for much of its history with companies such as Hoover Vacuum Cleaners Company being based out of Delaware since 1908 until it closed down operations there in 2010 due to financial difficulties. Today, despite some changes over time due to economic downturns or shifts away from certain industries such as manufacturing, Delaware County still remains a vibrant community with a strong economy based on both traditional industries such as agriculture as well new technology-based jobs that have recently emerged within its borders.
