According to top-medical-schools, DeKalb County, Tennessee is a county located in the central part of the state. It was founded in 1837 and named after Major General Baron Johann De Kalb, who was a hero of the American Revolution. The county has a population of approximately 18,000 people and covers an area of 541 square miles. The area that is now DeKalb County was historically occupied by Native American tribes such as the Cherokee, Creek and Shawnee prior to European settlement. In 1771, European settlers began to move into the area and established several small settlements along the banks of Caney Fork River. As more settlers arrived, these settlements developed into larger towns such as Smithville, Liberty and Alexandria. In 1837, DeKalb County was officially formed from parts of adjacent Warren and White Counties. The new county seat was established in Smithville where it remains today. During this time period, most people in DeKalb County were farmers who grew crops such as cotton and tobacco for income. In 1861, Tennessee seceded from the Union at the start of the Civil War and many men from DeKalb County joined Confederate forces to fight for their state’s cause. After the war ended in 1865, DeKalb County experienced a period of economic stagnation due to its reliance on agriculture-based industries that had been devastated during the conflict. However, industrialization began to pick up steam during this time period which allowed for new businesses to be established such as sawmills and gristmills. In more recent history, DeKalb County has seen steady growth due to its location close to Nashville which has made it attractive for commuters who want a rural lifestyle but still be close enough to major cities for work opportunities or entertainment options. This growth has led to an increase in tourism as well as new businesses being established throughout the county providing jobs for local residents.
