MBA Distance Learning without First Degree
Can you actually do an MBA if you have not completed a bachelor’s or first degree? The short answer: Yes, you can. You will find the detailed answer below, including a list of providers of an MBA distance learning course without a bachelor’s / first degree.
Before we give you the requirements for a corresponding part-time distance learning course without an existing first degree and whether we can do this at all or not, we will first list the appropriate degree programs.
Here you can start an MBA distance learning course without a bachelor’s / first degree
We asked all universities and academies that offer such a degree program. The result is a selection that is unfortunately not very large. But you should still find a suitable course of study.
Alternatives to distance learning: part-time evening / weekend studies
As you can see, the choice of distance learning courses is unfortunately not too large. Would you also consider completing the part-time course as an evening or weekend course?
Excursion to university law: MBA distance learning without a bachelor’s / first degree – how does it work?
It started in Rhineland-Palatinate. In 2006, the Mainz Ministry of Education introduced the rule that a master’s degree (including an MBA) can be taken even without a first degree. In the meantime, this possibility also exists in some other federal states, such as Hamburg, Bremen or Hesse. This is also possible in neighboring countries such as Austria.
However, there are also some federal states that do not participate in this opening of the education market, such as North Rhine-Westphalia, in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Here you don’t get a master without a bachelor. The federal states are still defending themselves against a target that was decided by the Conference of Ministers of Education in 2010. It stipulates that “in defined exceptional cases” an aptitude test can be sufficient as a prerequisite for admission to advanced Master’s / MBA courses.
Although you can study distance learning across Germany, the admission requirements initially depend on the location of the university. In addition, the university must also enable this path in its requirements: For example, the Euro-FH from Hamburg offers an MBA distance learning course without a bachelor’s degree, but the Hamburg Distance Learning FH requires a first degree.
The prerequisite for admission is always the university entrance qualification, coupled with several years of professional experience, as well as passing an aptitude test. An MBA distance learning course without a first degree cannot therefore be started directly after graduation.
If you are interested in an MBA distance learning course, but cannot have a bachelor’s or first degree course, you have to do a lot of research and be flexible, because the MBA distance learning courses are not available for every professional branch. Of course, you can then fall back on one of the General Management MBAs mentioned.
Does an MBA without a first degree make sense?
Honestly, if you haven’t fallen on your head and dare to learn eagerly, an MBA makes a lot of sense. For an MBA distance learning, you should have ambition, discipline and motivation to pass it. But this applies not only to applicants without, but also applicants with a first degree.
Is it too difficult for me to study?
Many professionals who are interested in this further training option also ask themselves whether the studies could be too difficult and therefore the dropout rates are higher. Or whether they are not too old for that at the age of 40.
Age: Most of those interested in an MBA distance learning course without a first degree are 40 years and older. The academic degree was not so important in the past, but today you need it to advance to management levels.
And to the question “Too difficult?”: Experience to date shows that students who have not had a bachelor’s degree can do as well in the master’s program as their fellow students. The lateral entrants have often already learned what their fellow students know from theory in practice. This means that both sides can benefit from one another and exchange their knowledge.
Ralf Haderlein from the Central Office for Distance Learning at Universities of Applied Sciences, ZFH for short, confirms this:
“Both groups can complement each other in terms of their skills.”
In his experience to date, master’s students without a bachelor neither have lower grades than their fellow students, nor do they tend to drop out of college.
In addition: For companies, these graduates are valuable employees with many years of professional experience, who have demonstrated their resilience and motivation through such an additional study program.
