MBA INTERVIEW WITH ANDRÉ SCHÄBEL, GOOGLE
André Schäbel, born in 1975, spent several months abroad after studying geography. He then studied international management at HHL and graduated with an MBA. Today he heads the “New Business Sales” area for German-speaking countries and Scandinavia at Google.
Firemen, locomotive drivers or doctors are the dream jobs of many children: What did you want to be when you were young?
First captain, later pilot. I was fascinated early on by traveling and taking responsibility.
Which decision did you make the most for your career?
I quit my job and decided to go abroad for a few months. That reinforced my plan to do an MBA and change my job. This decision showed me that it is worth changing your perspective and taking risks.
Why did you choose an MBA?
I was looking for a postgraduate course in International Management. That’s why I chose a full-time MBA program. At the same time, the international orientation of my studies was particularly important to me because I wanted to work in a global company afterwards.
Have there been moments when you have had doubts about this decision?
An MBA is very time and cost intensive. From time to time you wonder whether you can do all of this. But I never doubted that it was the right decision.
How do you deal with setbacks?
Errors and failures are very valuable experiences as long as you learn the right lessons from them.
The MBA is one of the most expensive training courses. Did this investment pay off?
Yes – in every way. The financial investment paid off in the first year after the MBA. In addition, the knowledge and contacts from the MBA course are ultimately very valuable life experiences.
What have you learned from your MBA for life and not for your job?
I met people from all over the world through my MBA. In addition to management basics, I also learned a lot about different cultures and global contexts. In particular, the soft skills from the MBA course are used again and again in everyday work.
Which role models are you based on?
To people with clear visions.
When do you advise academics to get an MBA?
I recommend anyone with an MBA who wants to develop professionally and personally. An MBA can be very rewarding, especially as a step into international management. But MBA is not the same as MBA. That is precisely why the choice of the right business school is crucial for success. I advise anyone who is considering an MBA to get detailed information. Because only an MBA from a renowned school is really worth something.
