Founded in 1891, LUZ is a century-old institution, with roots deeply embedded in the spirit of the region. Its path, from 1891 until its closure in 1904, until its reopening in 1946 has not been easy, its budget deficit has been a constant, as well as the confrontation with national governments and with power cliques that have tried to put it under control. service of a particular ideology or political model. The university has remained on its path and faces the third millennium planted in the lines of development that the future demands. Since the beginning of the 19th century, the inhabitants of Maracaibo had sued before the government of José Antonio Páez the creation of an institution of higher studies on the basis of the existing Colegio Seminario. This request was not successful, but the Marabinos persisted in their efforts: a university that would accompany the economic, cultural and intellectual development of the region was essential.

Designed by Dr. Jesús Enrique Lossada, LUZ’s first rector after the reopening, the shield is an elliptical figure, whose field is deep sky blue in color completely covered by small white clouds, elongated horizontally. The elements, prints and ornaments, all concur to symbolize that after 42 years of closure and reigning darkness, light, truth and wisdom shone again. Hence, the shield has eight light beams that pass through the clouds, and a window that is science, ready to open, without a lock or visible object to prevent it. The shield has two inscriptions indicate the dates of opening and reopening and a third inscription in Latin: Post Nubila Phoebus, which translates After the clouds, the sun.
