The county was established in 1819 from part of Franklin County and named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French nobleman who served in the American Revolutionary War. The county seat is Connersville and other towns include Brookville, Liberty, and Harrison. The first settlers began arriving in Fayette County in 1810 and were mostly German immigrants. As more people arrived, towns began to form andindustries such as farming, coal mining, brick making, and timber harvesting grew. Today, Fayette County is still an agricultural center but also has a strong manufacturing base as well as many other businesses that have grown up around these industries over time. The county still offers its residents plenty of recreational activities including camping at Whitewater Memorial State Park or fishing on Brookville Lake or golfing at one of its many courses throughout the county.
