An MBA is primarily a business management degree. Over time, additional industry-specific MBAs were introduced, such as the tourism MBA. Which variant you choose mainly depends on your career goals:

Generalist MBA
These include MBA courses that deal specifically with basic business content and do not convey this using a specific industry. These usually include subjects such as marketing, human resources, economics, accounting, investment, controlling and corporate management.
Study forms and course
There are only a few tourism MBA courses at German universities. But there is the possibility to study at foreign universities – because the programs are offered as distance learning courses.
In principle there are three types of study in Tourism MBA :
Tourism MBA as … | procedure | Requirement |
Full-time study | This is the “classic” course. You have a main job as a student and attend lectures on weekdays. | Working, if at all, is only possible to a very limited extent. However, the study time is shorter than with other variants. |
Part-time classroom study | The majority of the course content is taught as a lecture or seminar. As a student, you are therefore obliged to sit in the lecture hall at certain times. These times are usually at the weekend (Friday to Sunday), but there are sometimes lessons for a whole week. | The place of study should not be too far from your home, as you have to be there regularly.
Advantage: Learning through lectures and together with others is easier for many students than teaching themselves everything. |
Distance learning | They teach the majority of the teaching content themselves at home using study books, digital aids, etc. In some cases there are supplementary face-to-face courses. | It is important to be able to motivate yourself to learn – many underestimate this. The workload is approximately 10-15 hours per week over approximately two years.
Advantage: You are absolutely flexible in terms of space and time. |
There are big differences between the study forms in terms of the course and duration of the MBA course in tourism management.
