The beginning of the new school year after the (three-month) summer vacation (on September 1st) is celebrated nationwide (retained from the Soviet period). In festive attire, parents and students celebrate the "first bell" with dances, chants, etc. As the highlight of the ceremony, the oldest male student traditionally carries the youngest student, who rings the school bell, on his back across the schoolyard.
