According to top-medical-schools, Glades County, Florida is located in the southern part of the state and is bordered by Hendry County to the north, Lee County to the east, Collier County to the south and Palm Beach County to the west. The county seat is located in Moore Haven. Glades County was originally part of Lee County and was created out of a portion of it in 1921. It was named after the large number of lakes that are found in the area, known as “glades”. The original inhabitants of Glades County were Native American tribes such as the Calusa and Seminole. In 1821, when Florida became a U.S. territory, settlers began moving into Glades County from other parts of Florida and other states. The first major development came with the arrival of steamboat traffic on Lake Okeechobee which connected inland areas with ports on both coasts beginning in 1844. In 1887, Henry Flagler extended his Florida East Coast Railway line westward across Glades County connecting it with Miami and Key West. This development opened up access to markets for local agricultural products such as sugarcane, tomatoes and beans which led to an economic boom for Glades County during this time period. The 1920s brought an influx of new settlers into Glades County who were drawn by its rural charm and agricultural economy. During this time period many small towns such as Moore Haven, Palmdale and LaBelle were established along with larger cities like Clewiston which became a hub for sugar production in South Florida due to its proximity to Lake Okeechobee. In 1928 Hurricane San Felipe caused extensive damage across Glades County destroying many homes and businesses along its path through LaBelle and Palmdale before dissipating over Lake Okeechobee where it caused significant flooding damage across much of south-central Florida leading to thousands of deaths from drowning or disease due to contaminated water sources. Today, Glades Counties is still largely rural but has experienced some growth due to increased tourism related businesses such as airboat tours on Lake Okeechobee or camping activities at nearby Fisheating Creek State Park or Big Cypress National Preserve which provide visitors with access to some beautiful natural areas within easy reach from South Florida’s urban centers.
